>What type of vegetarian are you?

[lacto-ovo, vegan, ovo, lacto, pesca, semi, not-veg-yet, etc]<

Right now, none of the above, but aspiring toward lacto-ovo (but will

probably wind up closer to pesca for awhile).

> Why did you choose a vegetarian diet and if applicable what was the

isolated incident that prompted the change?<

You know how the universe keeps sending you gentle messages, but you

continually ignore them? Then, in desperation, the universe smacks you

upside the head with a figurative 2x4? Well, that's what is happening to me

I have been interested in vegetarianism for awhile. Last year I actually

made a half hearted effort toward pescatarianism. I think it lasted all of

a month. Why? Well, at the time my family's lifestyle involved eating out

fairly regularly (you know, wholesome foods, Scottish foods re: McDonalds..

) and I frankly got sick and tired of the fish sandwiches. Lame, yes, I

know. I'm a weenie. The year before I had a physical and my triglycerides

were high (573), cholesterol climbing (214), I had simple dysplasia, had to

have a diagnostic mammogram...it seemed like healthwise, I was degenerating

to a mess. Thus, the failed attempt at vegetarianism.

Last year - later, that is - dh and I were on a vacation, and for something

to read I picked up a copy of Natural Health magazine. In its pages I found

several items of interest, and consequently sent in for a subscription this

year. I also d to Body and Soul. Both in efforts to educate

myself in healthier living. I take several supplements (one could argue I

have expensive urine, but hey, it works! LOL!). After chest pains sent me

to the doctor, I discovered my triglycerides, cholesterol had dropped

drastically, the cardiologist said I have a good strong heart, my hormones

were finally balancing - iow, I felt I was just given a second chance at

good health! I don't want to mess this up! Dh and I discovered the DASH

diet on the same day and have started following it. This, in turn, leads me

back to vegetarianism. If I truly want to be healthy, environmentally

friendly (and here's the *out there* side - I want to become an animal

communicator), then not eating meat seems to fill all of those desires.

Soooo, long story short, that's why and how I am being led to vegetarianism.

BTW, my name is Kerry, mom to 3 kids who also happen to be open to a

vegetarian diet.
