Guest guest
That idea is based on old school science. It is now known that it isn't strictly sugar but carbs that causes blood sugar to spike. Since diabetics can't process carbs as normal people do because of a nonactive or underactive pancreas, total carb intake must be monitored. If it isn't, all sort of health problems ensue. I'm one of the fortunate diabetics in that my diabetes can be controlled with a pill, diet, and exercise. When I want something sweet, like chocolate on Valentine's Day, I eat it in moderation and continue to watch my diet the rest of the time. What I found most helpful with debunking all the diabetes myths was attending a diabetic support group that meets at my local hospital once a month. The coordinator has a different speaker come in each month to address an area of concern. We've had dietitians, ACE-certified personal trainers, podiatrists, dentists, etc. Perhaps you could check with your doctor to see if he/she knows of something similar in your neighborhood. Sorry for the novella but hope it helps. Bev p.s. A while back someone posted a link to an article showing how the vegetarian diet is the best for diabetics. Maybe you can google it to find the article. Valerie Cropsey <fantsybeads wrote: What is it about sugar or sweet items that diabetics can not have? Val Never miss a thing. Make your homepage.
