Guest guest
I teach pre-k and one of my student's mom was telling me yesterday about this Jessica Seinfeld person and hiding veggies in food and that she made the chicken nuggets that were dipped in pureed broccoli and then breaded and fried. The mom was telling me about how much her son " loved " the nuggets and she was so happy he was eating his veggies (I " m thinking the whole time...while biting my lip... that a few specks of broccoli fried onto meat is not " eating veggies " OR healthy). Today she sends her son (who is 4 years old and weigh 74 pounds) to school with those broccoli chicken nuggets in his lunch along with ranch dressing, chips and two desserts. The kid wants to eat his desserts first. I tell him he can't and that he has to eat the chicken first. He tells me he doesn't like it (I can't blame him...they totally smelled like ass). I bargain with him to eat two of the nuggets and then he can have the chips. He takes a bite, produces the most disgusted look on his face. I tell him to try another bite. He does and immediately gags and pukes all over the floor. Oh joy! At the end of the day I asked his mom to never pack those things in his lunch again. She seemed defensive when I told her I didn't think he liked them. lol. She was telling me that tonight she is making meatballs with butternut squash in them. I hope those are not packed in his lunch tomorrow! I'm always saddened by what is in my students' lunches. Rarely (and most never) do they ever have fresh fruit or veggies. I try to model good nutrition by bringing big fresh salads, fresh fruit, lots of raw veggies, and homemade soups in my lunch. They always seem interested in what I'm eating and it's a great oppurtunity for me to talk about eating healthy. I " m hoping it will sink in. I think it was zainypagan that sent a message about an author on Oprah that helped you put more veggies in kids' meals?
