So much more important info for anyone. We never know when we might need to evacuate, whether for fires in the area, floods, family emergency, hurricanes, toxic chemical spills, debri fallen on house, etc.... PLUS OUR LIST Bring as much loose outside items instead shelther, including patio tables and trampolines, plants, wind chimes, birdfeeders, etc.... Make sure all laundry is clean and dishes are washed prior to the event! Clean your house and vacumn. You might need to let someone stay with you, if their have damage to their home. Turn your thermostat way down to like 60 degrees a few hours before and keep the blinds closed to retain coolness as long as possible, once the power goes out. Minimize opening outside doors. We stock on quickly prepared foods, so our campstove fuel will last as long as possible and we don't have to cook any longer than necessary in the suffocating heat. Here are some of the things I get. Cans of fuel for campstove Instant mashed potatoes(I only use these during this time) Oatmeal Grits Pancake mix and Syrup Ketchup Oil Potatoes Onions Canned Loma Linda Little Links Dried and fresh fruit Nuts Canned Beans(including Vegetarian Bush Baked Beans), corn, beets and other veggies of your choice. Canned Fruit Manual Canopener Variety of breads, toppings, Peanut butter Basmati Rice that cooks in less than 10 minutes. Cereals - good healthy ones Canned Soups Spaghetti noodles and sauce Canned Meat Substitutes http://www.kelloggs.com/brand/worthington/ Most require very little cooking. Bottles of Juice, Gatorade, LOTS of water 1 qt. boxes of Parmalet 2% Cow Milk and Silk Soy Milk, Better than Milk(Soy milk powder). Sam's club carries these by the cases during hurricane season in area that are prone to it. It is great. You don't have to refrigerate it until you open it. You can buy it year around at Wal-Mart on the baking isle. It takes the same as those gallons of milk. With the Better than milk we make up a glass full at a time. Paper Products in case you only have bottle water for drinking with, that you need to save. I make up some muffins ahead of time along with some sandwich spreads and salads. Keep refrigerator closed as much as possible to keep it cool. Battery operated radio with TV if possible. Candles. Matches. Fluorescence lanterns and plenty of batteries(one for each person to put beside their bed, to get up with during the night. We also have wind up flashlights and radios. Weather radio. Cards and other board games. CD/cassette with battery option for listening to music and audio books. Books to read. Extra Medicine, Band-Aids, etc. Battery operatored clock If you are lucky enough to have a Generator - Plenty of gasoline - lots of extension cords to run to appliances, TV, pedestal fans(enough for each bedroom), hot plates, etc. Make sure you set up your generator OUTSIDE away from windows, where the fumes might enter the home. We fill our bathtub with water, in case the power is out at the water treatment plant, so we can use buckets of it to flush the toilets. I add a little chlorine bleach to it, to keep it sanitary. We also fill all the pitcher in our home with water and store in the refrigerator. For those with wells, you won't have any water available until power is restored. If you have 2 bathtubs fill one to reuse for baths and one for use with the toliet. Put about a 1/2 c. of bleach in each one to keep the bateria from growing. http://www.flylady.net/pages/FLYingLessons_Prepared.asp - Very Important Points for Evacuation - Click on this....... Guest guest
I am still trying to find the week of food list i created while i was living in florida..I am back in Washington state now and use a lot of the thigs for earthquake emergency. My dughter helped me create this and stil llives in Cocoa Beach area, and i will get it from her if i can't locate it. Any way....a few things to I thought I could mention here.... 1-WATER proof your matches, = melt some wax and dip the top. set stright to dry. Then store in a zip lock baggie, or an old candy tin if you have one. 2-ANY liquid that your canned vegis comes in, will make a great soup base..so don't wrory. Don't toss it out after opening a can, just save it into an empty bottle and use with in a day or so. Then you don't have to add or worry about prscious water for cooking soup or stew. 3-Go NOW to your local wally world and get at least 2 pkg's of Space bags. Or.. when you have the time, Think 3-5 weeks here, Do like I did and go online and order. I spent 159.** and have a few of the space bag box's ( they are new folks and they stack )for copies of important papers and such and bags enough for everyone. Into it, toss a full week's clothing for each member of your family. Mark the bag. Same goes for a blanket and pillow. 4- Take the time now. to get out of your groups..( lol ) and make a back-up copy of ALL of your files on your computer. Generally you can STILL work on your " stuff " while your burning copies " . After copies are made, you have 3 choices. Into the bank, or into your space bag-storage or send out of area to a friend or family to keep. This way, you don't loose everything like the pics you already scanned because you didn't do it after the LAST hurricane and your thanking G*D you still have them ok...enough..my soap box needs to be passed to the next, hope those idea's help some Hugs and love to stay safe Susan ______________________________\ ____ Got a little couch potato?
