Guest guest
Hello all, I am a 37 year old mom who was diagnosed recently with cancer. Since my diagnosis, I have been trying to become as healthy as possible. Therefore, one of the things I have done is to become vegetarian. However, I am having a problem trying to get enough protein in and 7 fruits/vegetables a day for cancer prevention. When I try to do both, I end up gaining weight. The guidelines say I need 45 grams of protein a day. Do I really need this much? I weigh 119 pounds. Any advice? Thank you!
Guest guest
Hello Laura, Yes with your weight, 45 is in the ball park. One way I am able to get in a lot of fruit is with a smoothie with berries,yogurt,O.J., and bananas. I get protein out of the yogurt and use protein powder. I really like Kashi's Go Lean vanilla. It has 29 grams of protein per serving, it is low in fat and full of vitamins and minerals. There are also many soy products out there that are fat free, low in calories and high in protein. If you like, I can share my favorites with you. Cottage cheese is also a good lean source of protein if you are not Vegan. I hope this helps. Guest guest
Happy Sunday Laura! I agree with Sheri that a smoothie is an excellent way to get both protien and fruits. And it's soooo yummy! One of my favorite ways to add protien is to use silken tofu in smoothies. My 6 year old loves these! Another option is to add nut butters such as almond, cashew, peanut etc. This is especially great with the obvious banana. When seriously short on time in the mornings, I will wizz up a soy, banana and " carnation instant breakfast " (chocalate of course but they do have vanilla and strawberry) and I find this a great mix of dairy and soy protiens but it is high in sugar though. Laura, have you checked out the great tofu section in recipes? Some fabulous ideas there! My mom is a breast cancer survivor and an incredibly strong woman. The journey to wellness can be difficult, but wellness can definately be attained. I'm sending warm waves and wishes your way Laura.
