Guest guest
Hey Ya'll - I LOVE this group! I enjoy reading the posts so much - there is such a variety of people and that makes the recipes wonderful and diverse<S>! I have been on the list for a little while by lurking, but needed to come out of the cobwebs to ask this question. I have a small herb garden in a 3'x 4' box I made. My Husband won't let me bring it into the house and it haws already gone through at least a few frosts already this year, since I live in Pennsylvania, outside of Kutztown, or 16 miles from Allentown. So, anyone who lives near me knows what it has been like this past week or so. Here's my querry: Since DH won't let me bring it into the D.R. (most sun), or any other part of the house; should I harvest all of the plants completely and hang to dry as usual for stems, or is it too late? One other option, is to see if I can give it away. The plants are Rosemary, English Thyme, Basil, Parsley, Lavendar, and Sage. I also have put my French Lavendar into another planter since that one was getting so full as the plants got bigger. Any Suggestions. (Next post I will introduce myself.) thanks in advance? Tracy ladyappliquer
Guest guest
Hello.. I've also been a lurker for a while... I've not been a gardener for long and I don't know how severe your frosts get but.. I'd recommend drying (if pos) the basil, and parsley... I live in Aberdeen in Scotland and I still have my Rosemary and Lavender outside and they haven't died yet...he rosemary has been through hundreds of frosts! I'm not sure about the otheres though as I don't grow them.. The other thing you could do is to wrap the pot in bubble wrap or an old blanket or something like that to keep the pot warmish and this might also work...I know people do this with delicate plants to look after them.. I'd listen to other peoples advice as well though! :-) Rebecca On Behalf Of ladyappliquer 26 October 2006 13:01 Fresh Herbs - Kind of Long Hey Ya'll - I LOVE this group! Guest guest
Hi Tracy Welcome to the group. You might want to try chopping and freezing some of those herbs - I have done that with parley, sage, basil, chives, coriander and thyme. I think the flavour stays truer to the fresh plant than if they are dried. I haven't tried drying rosemary. I live in Scotland and my rosemary bush is pretty hardy and has survived many years of living outside so I don't need to worry about it. Donna is our lavender queen and may have the answer for you on that one. Christie
