Organic just means to not use pesticides or chemicals. Lots of smart country folk know of cheap, easy ways to avoid pests that don't require buying anything. If these growers shared their tips with other growers and if the production of organic products increased with the sale of organic grain-fed or grass-fed animals, you'd soon have yourself a little corner on the market here in this part of TN. As of June 2006, there was maybe one certified organic farmer nearby the Grainger County area. That could easily change. Small farmers are finding it difficult to compete and find their place among the Big Agriculture producers. One solution may be to find a niche. Increasingly, consumers are purchasing organic foods and this market is on the rise.
