Guest guest
The QOTW [questions of the week] for May 21st-27th is: Do you have any memories of being forced to eat a certain veggie as a child that you believe caused you to dislike them? What about good memories? Do you think your parents did some good things to help broaden your palate by making you try something new? Is there a particular vegetable or fruit you just loathed as a child but that you now like?
Guest guest
I have hundreds of good memories of food from my Mom when I was a child. She was " the best in the west - better than the rest! " :0) As a kid, I used to feel a little left out in highschool because I never got to buy my lunch. I was always aware of how hard it was on Mom and Dad to keep us all in Catholic school on my Dad's salery, so I tried never to complain. Now, my friends on the other hand, ALWAYS got to buy their lunch from the " cages " ie, the vending machines. Thing is, they always wanted my lunch. My Mom used pita bread before it was " in " and she would take these hard Armenian sesame crackers and spread cream cheese and jam, or cream cheese and seasoning salt, on them the night before. By morning the craker was soft and my Mom would roll them up and cut them in pinwheels. We always had something like that with 2 homemade cookies, carrots and/or cucs., and a piece of fruit. My Mom was a genius and still is when it comes to cooking for the grandkids at 83. One thing that I hated was that we could never afford a lot of the fresh vegetables when they were out of season so we ate a lot of canned peas and canned lima beans.....oooooh yucky. Guest guest
I have been trying to remember, but for the life of me can't. My grandparents raised me for the most part and my grandmother cooked simply. Although she made one heck of an apple cake and a German chocolate cake. We had that standard American fare back then...meat, potatoes, veggie, fruit, milk and dessert. I know that I ate all of the veggies that were available in our area and my great-grandfather raised a complete garden and it was great. I am not sure that I loved all of the veggies she cooked but nothing stands out except for canned veggies which I still will not eat.. What does stand out and was completely disgusting was liver. I still retain those scars. But my grandmother did expose me to all sorts of vegetables and I think that is why I have a pretty open mind about trying new veggies. We didn't have access to many fresh fruits and I don't eat a lot of them even today. Too sweet actually. If she ever served celery you can bet I ran the other direction. linda " ~ PT ~ " <patchouli_troll Do you have any memories of being forced to eat a certain veggie as a child that you believe caused you to dislike them?
