The vast majority of U.S. pet owners (86%) consider their pets to be family members. This survey examines a variety of pet owner habits, including selection of human names as pet names, sleeping habits, and other questions. The results further support the majority's view of their pets as family members.

Keep the Seals, 63% Tell Pollsters

According to a Competitive Edge Research & Communication survey, 63% of adults in San Diego would prefer that the estimated 200 seals who live at Children's Pool beach in La Jolla be allowed to remain at the site; 25% want them removed. In a 2007 Zogby survey, more than 80% said the beach "should be rese

rved for educational seal watching."

BioCurex Introduces OncoPet a RECAF Blood Test for Cancer Detection in Companion Animals

Canadian company BioCurex announced the development of OncoPet , a blood test to detect cancer in dogs. The United States is home to about 75 million dogs and, on average, owners spend $219 per year on veterinary visits. Four out of every 1,000 dogs gets cancer each year, although more than 50% of dogs ultimately die of cancer.

More than 150 Thousand Pets Were Lost or Abandoned in 2008 (Spain)

In Spain, it is evident that there is a high rate of companion animal abandonment. In 2008, more than 118,000 dogs and 38,700 cats were recovered from the streets. 14% of these dogs had been lost, while the remainder had been abandoned. Of the cats recovered, 5% had been lost, while the remainder had been abandoned.

Trapping Harvest Statistics (Minnesota, 2004-2005)

Conducted by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, this study estimates the number of trapper licenses sold and the numbers of animals trapped during the 2004-2005 season. The sales value of the fur from trapped and hunted animals was down 28% compared with the previous season.

Domestic Hiss: Law on Keeping Dangerous Pets to be Eased

Proposed legislation in Britain would ease licensing standards for owners of exotic pets and result in fewer site inspections. A survey of 87 local authorities found 267 dangerous snakes, 36 camels, 36 scorpions, 30 crocodilians (including caimans and alligators), 23 big cats, and one zebra among the exotic pets kept in British homes.
