Guest guest
http://www.voicesofhumboldtcounty.com/?p=431 Petition Opposing: Democratic reps. voting for Salmon Extinction Amendment June 23, 2009 // Posted in Announcements, Salmon, State Legislature, Water Policy Center for Biological Diversity The collapse of West Coast salmon runs and the cancellation of California’s commercial and sportfishing seasons for salmon for the second consecutive year have made nationwide headlines. Recently, federal biologists recommended changes to water pumping operations in the San Francisco Bay-Delta that could help ensure long-term survival of winter- and spring-run Chinook salmon, green sturgeon, Central Valley steelhead, and orcas. However, an alarming number of Democratic Congressional representatives last week voted for a salmon extinction amendment by Central Valley Representative Devin Nunes that would have stripped funding for these court-mandated Endangered Species Act protections for Central Valley salmon. The amendment — Nunes amendment to HR 2847 — was defeated in a close vote of 218 to 208 in Congress, but Nunes will likely try to attach the extinction rider on other appropriation bills coming up the next couple of weeks. Over 40 Democrats voted for the amendment despite the fact that it would have lead to probable extinction of Central Valley salmon runs and other species. Please send a message to your Congressional representative today and urge them to uphold the protections for endangered Central Valley salmon — and let them know you will be watching how they vote on upcoming amendments. You can do even more by making a phone call today to your representative.
