Guest guest
PCRM/SUMMER 2009 Dear Mrs. Morgan, Children are in the worst shape of any generation in the history of North America. The rise in childhood obesity has paralleled the rise in consumption of meat, cheese, and sugar over recent decades. Our fight to give children more healthful, vegetarian options through their school lunch programs is in full gear. PCRM is busy on Capitol Hill advocating for improvements to the Child Nutrition Act (CNA). We’re also working at the grassroots level to get schools, students, and parents involved in this important fight. With your support, PCRM has had some early success. Broward County, Fla.—one of the largest school districts in the nation—now has vegetarian options in its public schools. Today, PCRM is actively: Working with Congress and the press to build a new understanding of the value of getting animals off our plates. Partnering with Montel Williams’ daughter, Wyntergrace, who’s encouraging her peers to push schools for healthy choices. Helping schools by offering a free recipe book and ideas of how to promote kid-friendly vegetarian recipes to students and parents. We’re making progress, thanks to your support!Neal D. Barnard, M.D.PCRM President Message to Congress:Children’s Health Is a Priority Child Nutrition Act Up for Reauthorization Each day, our government pushes greasy hot dogs and fatty cheeseburgers on lunch trays in school cafeterias across the country, jeopardizing the long-term health of America’s children. This summer, PCRM has the chance to give kids a better start. The Child Nutrition Act, which plays a critical role in determining what foods are served in the National School Lunch Program, is up for reauthorization by Congress—a process that occurs just once every four years. We expect Congress to vote before Labor Day, which gives us a little more time to ensure lawmakers put kids’ health before the profits of agribusiness. PCRM is rising to the challenge! We’re educating lawmakers on both sides of the aisle about adding more vegetarian foods to schools’ meal services, as well as reducing calories and saturated fat in school meals. These simple changes will protect children’s health, slow the child obesity epidemic in the United States, and save millions of animals! That’s because the National School Lunch Program will be less reliant on agribusiness factory farms that currently supply hundreds of millions of dollars worth of pork, beef, and other high-fat, high-cholesterol animal products to schools.
