BASH studio 65-71 Scrutton Street London EC2 The Camp for Climate Action is launching an auction of artwork. Proceeds will help build the massive social movement needed to tackle climate change. The event is a collaboration between well-known artists and grassroots activists. Art has often been vitally important in building transformative social movements. The money raised will go towards increasing the reach of the Camp’s already high-profile protests, which have included camps against airport expansion, coal-fired power stations and the financial system driving the climate crisis. Some of the artists involved include: Susannah Sayler of the The Canary Project is based in New York. The project aims to build understanding of human-induced climate change and motivate solutions through visual media, artwork and events. They work collaboratively and across disciplines, reaching diverse audiences in an effort to mobilize all sectors of society. In addition to photographs and documentary media, their programmes include installations, public art and performance, as well as competitions and lectures on conscientious, experimental design. Bob and Roberta Smith is a London based artist creating subversive installations, paintings and sculpture. Working under the belief that art can act as a catalyst for change, he attempts to create pieces that ask difficult questions and make use of the political system. Recently, his work has been displayed at the Tate Britain’s Triennial exhibition, Altermodern. Kate Evans is a prolific artist activist who has produced comics, cartoons and paintings about climate change, the anti-roads movement, the American occupation of Iraq and most recently breastfeeding awareness. Her work on climate change lends a hint of amusement to the incredibly serious issue, making it accessible to everyone. Hayley Newman’s work covers a range of artistic disciplines from performance to photography and sculpture to drawing. She has displayed and performed her work worldwide and is currently developing ideas for a documentary on climate change.
