Guest guest
Don't Let Them Kill Our CrocsInternational Fund for Animal Welfare The deadline for public comments is rapidly approaching: all submissions must be in by May 29th, 2009. Help us stop crocodile " trophy hunting " in the Northern Territory " Come to Australia, see our fantastic native wildlife...and then kill it! " Not exactly the most sensible tourism motto, is it? Certainly not for the vast majority of Australians or tourists - but for a small-but-loud group of hunters, it's exactly their idea of fun. And their current trophy-target is the saltwater crocodile, an animal that was hunted dangerously close to extinction until it was finally protected in 1971. Now the NT Government wants to turn back the clock on crocodile conservation by bowing to this vocal minority and reopening crocodile trophy hunting. Your help is urgently needed to block this plan. Hunting crocodiles for entertainment and money is a huge backward step for a country with a reputation as one of the world's top eco-friendly tourist destinations. The Northern Territory Government should focus on promoting more economically and ecologically sustainable tourism opportunities. After all, the majority of tourists travel to Australia to see our incredible wildlife in its natural habitat, not to kill it. The Australian Government's policy has been to prohibit trophy hunting of native animals - it's a policy that has been upheld for many years by both Coalition and ALP Federal governments. But that's all about to change, unless we join in strong opposition to this new plan. We can't stand by and let this happen. Don't turn back the clock on crocodile conservation. The Federal Government is seeking public comments on the " Draft Management Plan for Saltwater Crocodiles in the Northern Territory " by 29 May 2009. Please write or send an email to Environment Minister Peter Garrett asking him not to allow safari hunting as part of the crocodile management plan. Let him know you fully support the Federal Government's long-held policy in opposition to trophy hunting of native animals. Write to: Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts PO Box 6022 Parliament House Canberra ACT 2600 AUSTRALIA email: Peter.Garrett.MP And please forward this message to your all your friends and family - we need to get as many letters as possible in opposition of this plan. Trophy hunting is an unnatural form of wildlife 'management' as the largest, most 'desirable' animals are targeted. p.s. Please act fast - the comment period for this plan is only open until May 29th.
