This newsletter is dedicated to the memory of "Kwi Kwi", "Olivia", "Brittany", and "'Miss' Elizabeth".

This month's newsletter is dedicated to the loving memories of several noble friends. Kwi Kwi crossed the rainbow bridge, and Olivia died shortly thereafter of a broken heart. The Janes lost Brittany, a large yellow lab, to cancer. "Miss" Elizabeth relinquished her suffering at the vet's office. Our sincere sympathies go to Mo Crutchfield, Nancy and Rory Janes, and Bonnie Siddons.

"Miss" Elizabeth was a sweet, tiny yellow tabby who had beautiful wide stripes. She loved people and insisted that anyone who crossed her path give her lots of attention. We got her as a kitten, but as cats20were added to the household, and we began having cat wars and marking behaviors, many of them had to be sent to the garage to live as outdoor cats--with, of course, the garage for shelter, lots of good food and lots of soft bedding. We tried to bring her back in from time to time, but she just never could settle down for long in the house. During her last week she did come in and spent her nights and naps with my daughter. We miss her sweet little meow and demands for attention, but she is not suffering, and we know she is with all of our pets who have gone on before her to the Rainbow Bridge--we talked about that with her when we were at the vet's office for the last time. If my daughter can put her hand on a picture, I will send it on.

Dear Supporters and Friends,

RAR has become quite a force in Romania, with our 5000th spay/neuter in March, our US veterinary program that has trained 22 vets and students in Romania, our affiliation with Romania Animal Rescue Foundation who does adoption and education in Ro

mania, and our partnership with Dr. Aurelian, a co-founder of RARF in Romania, who charges us the minimal cost of of $22 per spay/neuter.

Our new goal is to be able to purchase a mobile spay/neuter and treatment clinic. Our poor caravan, which is 30 years old, is slowly dying.

A mobile clinic allows us to travel all over Romania to remote places, shelters and towns that need free spay/neuter help. This is the least expensive way to go because we will not have to invest in land, construction of a clinic, water, electricity, etc.

RAR is also planning to hire two new vets in 2010, if funding permits, to be able to join in our Spayathons, so that we can offer them to more areas more often. We are also still providing spay/neuter via Drs. Aurelian (Ricky and Pepe) in Bucharest and to a smaller degree in Craiova.

Enclosed in this newsletter are pleas for help from other Romanian charities that are trying their best to help the animals. RAR is happy to allow these groups our forum to draw attention to their needs. We are all in this together for the animals. Thank you for your help for the animals in Romania!

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Nancy

World Woof Tour

($2300 donated so far! Thank you for your support!)

The World Woof Tour is coming to Romania on May 29, 30, 31, and June 1. They will be in Bucharest and Sibiu. This is a very exciting time for RAR in Romania! Dr. Aurelian has received donations of sutures and other supplies from Dr. Richard Bachman, ROMP (San Francisco), Wildlife Center of

VA, Tony La Russa's ARF, Shor-line, Best Friends Animal Society, Mary Young, and Stichting Wereld Asielen. And now, you can help

us continue to prepare for this tour with your donation.

RAR recently sterilized some dogs for Phoenix and has invited GIA to be a part of the World Woof Tour in May, along with Animal Life Sibiu and Nature Heritage for our Future, Bucharest. The dream of having cooperation

among organizations in Romania has been a goal of mine for many years, and the joy that is mine can now be shared by many!

SF SPCA and the SF Animal Control invited Romania Animal Rescue to tour their facilities. Their ideas for animal welfare can be implemented in Romania by doing the following things:

No adoptable dog or cat will be euthanized. Hold hearings and submit recommendations regarding animal control and welfare to local legislators. Involve the city Tax Collector to develop and maintain dog-licensing procedures.

Dr. A and Mr. C

Dr. Aurelian is going to help Mr. Cenac's dogs week of April 26. Mr. Cenac's dogs will be spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and treated for parasites and disease thanks to a very generous sponsorship from Stichting Wereld Asielen in Holland! The dog food sponsors for Mr. Cenac are donated monthly, so Mr. Cenac is one of the happiest people in Romania! Thank goodness for the kindness of truly caring people such as our donors!

While on the subject of Mr. Cenac, Stichting Wereld Asielen published a story about his good work running the shelter in Galati, Romania.

The original article can be found on the Stichting Wereld Asielen website. Here is a translation of it:

It has been admitted in the Netherlands, how the countries around the Mediterranean Sea and in the Eastern Bloc work. Animals that roam the street are brought to shelters in a brutal manner, and die within at the most ten days. Euthanasia is not discussed, as it costs money. Thus one clubs the animals in the head or strangles them. They generally do not get food or drink; as they soon die.

Thus it goes at many places in Romania. But in the city of Galati, a man stood up one day, and found that an alternative was possible. He spoke to the municipality and offered to help the dead animals. YOU guessed it. We have it here concerning Mr. Cenac, the pensioned engineer, dear friend to the downtrodden, the man with the heart of gold.

How he managed it we will not know, but he ensured the municipality that the dogs placed in this asylum will not be killed. Kudos to the municipality of Galati, because this municipality in Romania didn't leave the care of our dear friends to live their lives out like vermin. Are

there still a couple of so–called "dog pounds" in this city? Wereld Asielen hopes that these will follow his lead in the long run.

Meanwhile there are 250 such dogs in Mr. Cenac's asylum and he knows them all by name. He is endeared to them and calls himself with pride "the father of the pack".

The animals for their part are all crazy about him, and the same applies to the Romanian volunteers who regularly bring sick and victim animals to Mr. Cenac. These animals remain and are very spoiled.

The asylum lies just outside the city of Galati and has been featured in a former animal fur–lined coat campaign.

Their living conditions are make–shift, and the animals get mainly cheap meat bones to eat. But, the dogs have much more freedom and a roof above their head in the severe Romanian winters.

Moreover they, perhaps for the first time in their life receive love. That is probably the most beautiful gift that Mr. Cenac can give them.

Because there is much corruption in Romania, Wereld Asielen do not make direct money contributions to this country, but to Romania Animal Rescue (RAR) in California does. We cooperate with this renowned animal aid organization, of

which the primary dynamo is Nancy Janes, a woman who for years runs the Romanian organization that helps strays.

Certainly the money is well spent. Nancy flies regularly (on collected airmiles) to Romania to visit Mr. Cenac's dogs. Thanks to an interpreter who accompanies her at all visits, she keeps abreast of the situation.

On one occasion Nancy discovered that there much too a little food for Mr. Cenac's dogs. She opened a bank account for him immediately in America when she returned, and ensured that every month he could withdraw an amount in Romania for food for the animals. This worked well until the economic crisis struck. Many American donors cancelled their donations, affecting the destiny of Mr. Cenac' s animals with no more food.

Although we also see at Wereld Asielen are affected by the bad economy, we nevertheless immediately provided aid. Wereld Asielen donates money starting January for food so that the 250 mouths could be filled. The response from Nancy, who meanwhile had many sleepless nights because of the care for Mr. Cenac and his animals, was gratitude.

Mr. Cenac also gave us thanks. Wereld Asielen received a thick parcel containing neat accounts of the food he bought, and a splendid handwritten letter (including English translation) from him in which among other things th

anked our donors:

Although I never met you, I thank you from my heart for having taken care of these creatures forgotten and hated by many people.

His thanks was accompanied by a battery–operated photograph, of which we published on our website. Wereld Asielen continues to help Mr. Cenac's animals with food until Nancy can take it over again.

But still something stood out for this asylum where we wanted contribute; and that was a water well. The cost for this amounted to 1000 euro. In asylums with no water, it must be obtained with large jerrycans from the city. YOU can see for yourself--the effort for supplying water to 250 dogs. In this way, the animals do not have sufficient water to drink, and is impossible for Mr. Cenac to keep the asylum clean.

And as if this was not yet enough, the veterinary surgeons had stopped sterilising Mr. Cenac dogs because they found them too dirty! This was so harrowing that we brought it to the attention of our donors to write the following:

Kind donators of Wereld Asielen! We know that these are not rosy times and that there are also people worse off than you. We have for that, of course, the fullest term and hopes of a rapid recovery. But do not run out on the strays!

=2

0 A man such as Mr. Cenac, and all those other people who ensure daily these animals, deserve nevertheless not to be left to their fate. They have suffered so much already. For this reason we you ask, "remain steadfast so that we can continue to help the strays."

And like what happens so often in times of need, our donors reacted appropriately. Within a short amount of time we had the money for the water well. But there continued increasing concern about the consignment of food delivered to Mr. Cenac's dogs. This really helps because the animals have gotten used to scraps. We have, however, asked not to raise a surplus, but add soup bones and scraps to the food they get already. This should prevent the animals from overeating and becoming sick because of it.

Wereld Asielen thanks again its donors, because if we bear the brunt each time, everything will turn out well. The most beautiful compliment which we can give them for this is probably the stateement from a new volunteer at Wereld Asielen: "Everyone always says that we have kind donors!"

Gas Station Dog Campaign

Many people have written to Nancy Janes and Romania Animal Rescue from all over the world who have seen the horrors of the dogs living outside of the gas stations in Romania. Everyone has a story, and asks for our help. Recently, Dr. Aurelian wrote to me about stopping at a gas stations on his way to Galati. Here's his story:

I am planning in aquiring the second anesthesia machine so I can take it with me on the road especially for the bad cases of seriously injured dogs.

On the way to Galati I stopped at some gas stations and what I saw almost made me cry: There are dogs that are living around the gas stations and they are very very skinny and of course without any basic care. I am planning a spay trip in summer, custom made for the gas station dogs! Groups like Gia and Phoenix announced they will volunteer for this action.

Dog Carts from Eddie's Wheels

We also were so fortunate to be able to help in the facilitation of getting a cart for a dog in Arad, Romania. Eddie's Wheels donated a cart to Cristina for Billy in Arad, and RAR was able to send it to Romania via our friend and RARF manager in Bucharest, Livia Brenner. Now Billy will have his set of wheels, just like Anna Marie!

On Easter

Joey

Dear Nancy,

We found this dog, Joey, on Easter Day. At first, seeing him so injured, so sick, in this critical state our first thought was to bring him to a doctor to put him to sleep. He looked awful and he was very scared; he tried to bite us. But the look in his eyes made us change our mind.

He is now at our shelter, we gave him medicine and we wait for the results. He is a cheery dog now. Help us to keep helping them! How come that is is only us who see them?! We know that we have crossed the limit taking care of too many animals but we do not know what to do.

Thank you!

Help Labus

Help Labus found it in their hearts to

take him into their shelter, and are reshaping his life with love and kindness. Let's help Joey to get the medical attention and food he needs as well! Our goal is to get Joey healthy and re-habilitated, so that Livia can find him a forever home! Rory and I will start the "Donation for Joey" at $30--can you help him too?

Meet Horsy

Meet Horsy, found by Animed Arad in Arad, Romania. Animed Arad needed $450 to purchase Horsy from the gypsy who owned her. RAR gave Animed Arad the $450 for the horse. Then Nathalie Eelco from Holland arranged a rescue of Horsy to Holland. These photos show Animed Arad building a stable for Horsy, on August 24th, and Horsy romping around Holland's countryside.
