Guest guest
Article: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/30173033// Too bad the dog wasn't past puppyhood, or a breed or mix (with little dander) which is easily found in shelters or rescue groups, such as puppymill dogs. If the Obama's had chosen a dog that was at least beyond puppyhood, a dog that wasn't so hard to find, and a dog from a rescue group or shelter, the dogs in this country just might be better off. The article says this is how the Obama's got their dog: "The Obamas have long said they wanted a rescue dog. But the carefully bred PWDs almost never end up in shelters. Bo had been living with another family, but it wasn't a good fit, so the Kennedys acquired him for the Obamas." And this is how the Obama's supposedly aim to "appease" the rescue community: "As for the rescue pledge, the Obamas came up with a solution intended to lend a serious symbolic note: They're going to make a donation to the D.C. Humane Society." In my opinion, a dog that didn't work out with a family and then transferred to another family is a rescue dog. Even rescue or shelter dogs come with a fee. However, the breeders won't see it that way, and I imagine both sides -- the breeders and the animal welfare community -- will spin their own tail (pun intended). In memory of my sweet old man, Caesar D. (April 1995-Jan. 6, 2009): "They are gone from our sight...but never our memory, gone from our hearing...but never our hearts, gone from our touch...but their presence is felt, and the love that they gave us never departs."
