Guest guest
Below is the Letter to the Editor I just sent in. If you'd also like to write to The Buffalo News to set the record straight, e-mail lettertoeditor (@buffnews.com). I just received today's online article in the "Opinion" section of The Buffalo News (http://www.buffalonews.com/248/story/568981.html). I was nodding my head in agreement with everything the writer said until I got to: "Massachusetts recently voted to ban dog racing by 2010. That¢s too bad. The sport was said to be cruel to animals, but greyhounds are born to run, and they eventually find their way into loving homes. Without dog racing, sadly, fewer greyhounds will be brought into this world." That made it quite clear to me that the writer knows nothing about the horrors of greyhound racing, the pups killed on the puppy farms, and the thousands of greyhounds destroyed each year after they're done racing. Yes, there are many greyhound rescue groups across the country, but there's a neverending supply of greyhounds who need rescue, and thus a great majority of the dogs end up being killed when they stop winning. In MA, it is estimated that only 14% of the racing greyhounds get adopted (MA State Racing Commission 2006 stats). For more information about the facts, one can visit Grey2K USA's, Greyhound Protection League's, and/or the Humane Society of the U.S.'s websites. In memory of my sweet old man, Caesar D.
