URGENT: VEGAN in life or death situation starving in LA COUNTY JAIL

I have been contacted by SUNDAE, the fiance of guitarist IRA BLACK

(currently LIZZY BORDEN, previously METAL CHURCH, VICIOUS RUMORS and

HEATHEN), incarcerated since January 6th at the downtown LA County

jail, apparently related to a misdemeanor unpaid traffic violation

warrant. Mr. Black, vegan for 15 years, has been denied vegan meals by

the jail, a distressing decision tantamount to starving him, which

then is tantamount to torture. In addition, I was told, Mr. Black has

been ridiculed and beaten, and continually threatened by guards and

inmates with further violence, and solitary confinement if he wouldn't

conform to the regular prison diet of rotting flesh and animal

secretions. Mr. Black fears for his life. He is being harshly

persecuted for deeply held beliefs about which the jailers are making

a mockery with outrageously disrespectful, attempting to deceive him

into eating so-called " food " derived from decomposing cadavers and

trans-species mammary fluids, which Mr.Black does not recognize at all

as " food " , understanding also the health risks of consuming such dead

offerings. But of paramount importance is that Mr. Black cannot and

does not eat meat, fish, poultry, eggs, and dairy because of his

deeply held moral convictions. Because of the jail's policy of

starvation, Mr. Black has been forced into a 6-day hunger strike,

during which he has lost 10 pounds, and currently feels sick and

dizzy. He believes if he collapses or faints, no one will come to his

aid - a situation he says he has witnessed in the case of other

prisoners. After the 6th day of his hunger strike, Mr. Black was given

his first - and thus far - ONLY vegan meal. Other inmates expressed

admiration for his adherence to his ethical principles, UNTIL the

guards, in what could only be considered an act of vindictive sadism,

ended TV and phone privileges for ALL inmates - and blamed that on

IRA BLACK'S vegan meal, of course causing increased hostility for Mr.

Black black within the prison population. It is not known if Mr. Black

has received a second vegan meal. Guards continue to threaten him with

further beatings and solitary isolation confinement. He continues to

fear for his life. Mr. Black should not have to fear for his life

because of his moral beliefs or what is put on the plate he is served

in jail. After our first priorities which are to express concern for

the physical well-being of Mr. Black to the encarcerating authorites

and gaining assurance he will be fed vegan meals during his

incarceration - which should end now based on the incredible torture

he has had to endure.

 

This may be the opportunity for a bankrupt prison system which cannot

afford proper health care to inmates to examine the cost benefits of

vegan dietary options and the benefits of a vegan diet associated with

decreased violence in the prison populaton (documented in studies at

the Apple Valley Medium Correctional facility).

 

I spoke to a SGT HUMMEL at Sheriff's HQ today, inquiring about the

condition of Mr. Black. He said he will look into it and I will be

contacted. I said I also intend to examine this issue on my radio

program, and hope to have a sheriff's spokeperson to address charges

made byMr. Black and fiance Sundae. Detention must not become a

Guantanamo experience because someone chooses an ethical,

compassionate lifestyle. Mr. Black asked assistance from the chaplain

(I was told his name is VINCE COLAVITTI), whom I am attempting to

contact. The chaplain said he could not help obtain vegan meals for

Mr. Black because his request was not for religious reasons.

Apparently deeply held moral and ethical convictions don't qualify.

However, if the chaplain would just go back to the front of his bible

to Genesis Book 1 Verse 29, he would see that he too is supposed to be

vegan, as that is the proscribed biblical diet. Mr. Black's request

also conforms to the moral ideals of Jainism, Hinduism, and Buddhism

where the vegan diet is embraced for the first precept of AHIMSA, non-

violence and not killing, with compassion for all sentient beings. The

chaplain may also be reminded of THOU SHALT NOT KILL the next time he

is asked to write a note recommending vegan meals. Jews and Muslims

would not be forced to eat ham by LA County Jail, and vegans shouldn't

either. Mr. Black should not be required to put his health at

immediate risk for food poisonings , such as EColi, salmonella,

listeria, campylobacter, etc. commonly caused by the current LA County

jail diet, and the longer-term risks of heart disease, cancer, stroke,

diabetes. obesity, osteoporosis, etc.

 

It could be time for vegan sensitivity training at LA County Jail.

 

PLEASE CALL SGT HUMMEL TO EXPRESS YOUR CONCERN FOR THE CURRENT

PHYSICAL CONDITION OF IRA BLACK. CALL AND POLITELY ASK THAT HE BE

RELEASED IMMEDIATELY BECAUSE OF THE TRAUMA HE HAS HAD TO EXPERIENCE -

PLEASE ASK THAT MR BLACK BE GIVEN 3 VEGAN MEALS DAILY WHILE IN CUSTODY
