A 2-year-old girl was shot accidentally today when her father's hunting rifle fired as he removed it from his truck, authorities said.

Jefferson County sheriff's deputies responded at 5:24 p.m. to the call in the 7700 block of Taylor Shop Road in Clay near the St. Clair County line, said sheriff's spokesman Lt.Randy Christian.

According to a preliminary report, the child's father was getting his rifle out of the truck when it accidentally discharged, Christian said. The bullet passed through the passenger door and struck his daughter, who was standing outside the truck. The child was treated by paramedics and taken by ambulance to Children's Hospital, Christian said.
