At about 1:27 p.m., the Washington County Sheriff's Department learned of the incident. Deputies and Department of Natural Resources game wardens investigated the shot. A group of 16 hunters was conducting a deer drive, when one of the group fired a shot that hit Roger B. Brokaw. The slug bounced off the ground before hitting Brokaw.

Investigators tracked the path of the slug through an area of thick brush to find out who fired the shot.
