RE: ACTION ALERT / UPDATE - KARLEY: Puppy Beaten by Los Angeles Assistant Fire Chief Glynn Johnson

Incident Summary - California

On November 3, 2008, Los Angeles Assistant Fire Chief Glynn Johnson (who resides in Riverside County) allegedly beat his neighbors' 6-month-old shepherd mix puppy, Karley, so severely she had to be put down hours later. He apparently broke her nose and jaw, gouged out an eye, and crushed her skull with a rock.

An eye witness said the brutal attack was completely unprovoked, but Johnson is claiming self-defense. He sports a bandaged thumb, stating that the little dog almost severed it. If so, such likely would have occurred only as she clamped down either reflexively or consciously in a desperate attempt to prevent Johnson from shattering her jaw.

Rally to be held by Last Chance for Animals (LCA) on December 3, 2008

Last Chance for Animals (LCA) is planning to hold a rally in front of the Riverside County District Attorney's Office located at 4075 Main St., Riverside, CA 92501 on Wednesday, December 3, 2008 from 11 A.M. to 1 P.M. The meeting spot is 4100 Main, at the courthouse right across the street. Please attend to demand that felony animal cruelty charges be filed immediately against Los Angeles Assistant Fire Chief Glynn Johnson.

Below you will find repeated the street address - as well as additional contact information - for the Riverside County Assistant District Attorney, Chuck Hughes, and some points you might wish to make as we ask that you continue to demand accountability for Glynn Johnson's reprehensible action. Included are links to the Justice 4 Karley Website and Map Quest - to make sure the demonstration is still on, to keep current with other information and events regarding this issue, and to obtain driving directions from your location to the demonstration site.

Demonstration Held on November 15, 2008

On Saturday, November 15, 2008, about 150 demonstrators showed up in Riverside County (the location of the offense) to voice their outrage against this unconscionable act by a high-ranking public official. Glynn Johnson is an Assistant Fire Chief in Los Angeles, a role which clearly mandates the highest standards of personal and professional conduct, public service, and community trust.

In stark violation of all three, Johnson remains comfortably at home on paid administrative leave with no charges filed to date by the Riverside County Assistant District Attorney, Chuck Hughes, to whom the case was delivered after Johnson refused to co-operate with the customary 30-day investigation assigned to Sheriff's Investigator Cherie Blossfield and despite a petition bearing 1800 (at last count) signatures demanding legal action.

Some Points You Might Wish to Make to Officials Listed Below:

1. Karley deserves justice for her suffering and death.

2. Karley's family deserves recognition for their emotional pain and loss.

3. The perpetrator needs to pay for his grievous crime.

4. Animal abuse should not be tolerated in a civilized society.

5. Persons in high-ranking positions must cleave to the highest standards of personal and professional conduct, public service, and community trust.

6. Animal abuse is a known harbinger (predictor) of future abuse of humans.

7. The message needs to reach other prospective abusers that they will not get away with such behavior.

8. Failure to prosecute animal cruelty enables law enforcement agents to serve, in effect, as "accessories before the fact" when it typically morphs into human abuse.
