Dear Susana, The first weekend in November used to mark the official start of the fox hunting season, when hunts would set their dogs on foxes for 'sport'. Thankfully the Hunting Act 2004 made it illegal to chase and kill a wild mammal in England and Wales for entertainment. I am writing to you today to ask you to help us improve the enforcement of this important law. Please write your MP today, and ask them to contact Alan Campbell

MP, the new Home Office Minister responsible for policing the Hunting Act, to make sure he is doing all he can to get this important law enforced. To see scenes of pre-ban hunting IFAW hunt monitors were instrumental in exposing the inherent cruelty of hunting with dogs. Since hunting has been outlawed they have continued their vital work by peacefully filming hunts and passing on any evidence of potential law breaking to the police for investigation. IFAW has also set up a training programme for police that provides officers with the expertise and knowledge necessary to carry out effective investigations. Brave hunt monitors will not be

deterredYet disturbingly, year in and year out there are numerous reports of monitors being assaulted and intimidated by hunters and their supporters. Otis Ferry, son of musician Brian Ferry is currently awaiting trial after being accused of robbing a hunt monitor, assaulting another monitor and perverting the course of justice. Hunts claim they are acting within the law but when recently asked if IFAW monitors could accompany hunts a Countryside Alliance spokesperson told police: 'that's not going to happen'. Is this reasonable behaviour if hunts really have nothing to hide? IFAW will not be intimidated and our monitors have pledged to continue their difficult jobs, but we would like to see more police forces also monitoring hunts in their areas. In October 2008 steps were made in the right direction when the Association of Chief Police Officers hosted a conference to allow representatives from police forces across

England and Wales to share their knowledge and experience on enforcing the Hunting Act. Prosecutions under the Act are mounting with 29 reports in the press of people successfully convicted of breaking the law protecting foxes, hare, deer and mink, and another 18 individuals are awaiting trial. Yet sadly some people think they can ride roughshod over the law. Wherever there is a law there will be law breakers but it is important that the Home Office sends a strong message to police forces that no one is above the law. Please help by emailing your MP today. Let's make sure our government is doing all it can to enforce this important law. Sincerely, Robbie MarslandDirector, IFAW UK P.S.
