According to the Warren County Sheriff's Office, the hunter accidentally shot himself in the foot with a .270-caliber rifle. He was identified as Julio C. Blanco, 65, of East Stroudsburg, Penn. Warren County Undersheriff Robert Swan said the man was hunting alone, and his wounds weren't believed to be life-threatening. Blanco was taken to Glens Falls Hospital for treatment after he made his way out of the woods and found help at a home on Beach Road. He had been hunting from a tent in the woods on the south side of the lake, and made his way to a canoe to row across the lake to find help after he injured himself, police said. Sheriff's Lt. Shawn Lamouree said the rifle was new to Blanco, and he told police it discharged as he lowered it. It was unclear if he was moving at the time. Lamouree said the shot hit the instep of Blanco's left foot, and hit a bone near his big toe. The Northern Zone deer hunting season started Saturday, and this appears to be the first local hunting accident of the year. The state Department of Environmental Conservation was assisting sheriff's officers with the investigation. This story will be updated on poststar.com as more details become available.
