Guest guest
Dear AR Activists and Rescue Groups:I am looking for individuals/groups that would like to become involved in a grassroots effort to reduce pet overpopulation within their communities. The following plan could be implemented in communities across the U.S. immediately, and at no additional cost for shelters OR rescue groups. It takes a zero budget to set up. Please let me know if you'd be willing to get involved or know of other AR groups who would. [similar programs do exist and have extremely good success rates.] For inquiries / feedback please contact Brennan Browne at: endspeciescide at hotmail dot comORendspeciescide at dot com~ PARTNERING WITH RETAILERS TO REDUCE PET OVERPOPULATION ~This common sense strategy will immediately and dramatically facilitate REDUCING THE GLUT OF UNWANTED ANIMALS suffering and dying in shelters -- and will help alleviate the continued overtaxing of animal rescue organizations. It shifts the balance of responsibility from the few--shelters and animal rescue groups--onto the shoulders of the many--retailers who sell animals. And who overwhelmingly contribute to the epidemic of surplus animals, by supporting animal 'mills', and by selling UNALTERED pets.GOALS OF THIS PLAN- To immediately redistribute the surplus of animals being killed in shelters, by transferring them to retail locations for purchase into good homes.- To stop the flow of FUTURE UNWANTED ANIMALS by giving retailers ALTERED, free, healthy, adoptable animals to sell.- To redirect animal retailers AWAY from supporting unscrupulous animal 'MILLS' by giving them a socially responsible, profitable and free alternative.- To shut down the majority of animal mills completely, permanently and without lawful intervention, by simply DRYING UP their largest customer base -- the retail animal industry.- To facilitate creating a simple system for matching the needs of 'participating' retailers [DEMAND], with their local 'participating' animal shelters [sUPPLY.]With potentially thousands of retailers selling [FIXED] shelter animals, and the majority of animal mills shut down, the surplus of unwanted animals should drop by a projected 75%.HOW THE PLAN WORKS -- PART 1~ GETTING RETAILERS INTERESTED ~In order for retailers to desire to participate in switching from 'mill' animals to shelter animals they must be persuaded to see the business advantages in making such a change. We all know that the bottom line for a business selling animals-for-profit, has NOT been historically the same as those of animal-loving groups, whose only goal is a wonderful home for the homeless. However, these goals CAN BE ONE IN THE SAME!INSTRUCTIONS:Two volunteers [per store] will visit every animal retailer in their community.A personal visit by TWO activists, interacting with the store owner, is the preferred way to present the material--suffice it to say that this is the most successful way to leave a positive impression and hopefully obtain the retailer's participation. :~)Please CALL AHEAD to find out when the owner or TOP management will be on the premises. Once in the store, tell them the name of the organization you represent and EXPLAIN THE STRATEGY. Hand them the printed material below with YOUR INDIVIDUAL [not your organization's] CONTACT INFO included on the sheet. [This allows those making personal visits to retailers, to keep control over any problems, questions, mis-communications, etc...and it helps form a 'bond' with that particular business owner.] The information gathered by the volunteer can then be handed over to the appropriate rescue group to be 'processed', if the retailer desires to participate. Volunteers should maintain continued contact with each [interested] retailer they meet, to make sure things run smoothly.NOTE:Volunteers will need to make charts, keeping basic notes for EACH store: Owner's name, store location /address, condition of animals in store, cleanliness of establishment, retailer's attitude and anything else which is pertinent. If the retailer shows interest in participating in the program, volunteers need to jot down the number of animals s/he can take; how many cats; how many dogs; how many kittens & pups vs adults, etc.-- if there is no preference that should be noted as well. The more detailed the info the better. The goal is to try to accommodate retailers' desires as much as possible, while tactfully leading them to understand that they may not realistically be supplied with all of their preferred choices. Not all potential retail consumers want puppies or kittens--older animals are often sought due to their even temperaments and less complicated needs. A good mix of both young and older cats and dogs should be the goal.BELOW IS THE PRINTED INFORMATION TO BE GIVEN TO EACH RETAILER****************************************************************************************************************************************Dear Animal Retailer:As an important member of our business community, local animal rescue organizations, would like to cordially invite you to participate in an exciting new strategy entitled, "Partnering with Retailers to Reduce Pet-Overpopulation."BENEFITS TO YOUR BUSINESS:- An immediate REDUCTION in operating expenses- An immediate INCREASE in profits- REDUCED animal health care costs- GOODWILL within your community- Free Positive PR which = loyal customers & higher longterm PROFITS- Knowing you are a visionary whose ethical business practices are alleviating unnecessary suffering and deathAs dedicated individuals, who have volunteered countless hours to ensuring those which cross our path have every opportunity to become members of loving human families, we realize that we cannot achieve this goal ALONE.To this end, we are asking you to share in making happy homes a reality for animals who through no fault of their own, would otherwise be sentenced to death. More often than not, under extremely inhumane conditions. Gassing and excruciatingly painful heart-stick euthanasia are common place in shelters. Disease, overcrowding, stress and substandard care are all suffered daily in shelters across America, by the most helpless among us. However, with your kind spirit of cooperation and gracious involvement, YOU can help change this situation for animals dramatically and immediately.WHAT'S THE PLAN AND HOW DOES IT WORK?"Partnering with Retailers to Reduce Pet-Overpopulation" is a grassroots effort, whereby, animal rescue organizations, local community shelters, and retailers work TOGETHER toward ending our country's shameful animal surplus--one community at a time. Multiply that by millions of communities across the nation, and we can win the war being waged against the helpless and unwanted. This is achieved by:Placing HEALTHY, adoptable animals from local shelters / rescue organizations [which have been altered and vaccinated PRIOR to placement] into retail stores. This immediately reduces shelter overcrowding; eliminates the need for retailers to buy their animals from "mills", and most importantly, STOPS ANIMALS FROM REPRODUCING once they leave the seller's establishment.Retailers selling neutered/spayed animals forces a dramatic reduction in pet overpopulation because a MAJORITY of consumers still choose to buy their animal companions from retail establishments. When retailers refuse to buy from animal mills, and instead, choose to support shelters and rescue organizations by obtaining, free, healthy, altered animals, they then become instrumental in TURNING OFF 75% of our nation's surplus flow of animals.AS A PARTICIPATING RETAILER, WHO PAYS FOR ALTERING & VACCINATIONS OF THE ANIMALS I SELL?In order to give retailers an excellent incentive to become part of our program, fees for spay, neuter, vaccines and other vet pre-screening required prior to an animal's placement in your retail location, will be paid by those shelters and other organizations participating in the program.WHY WOULD THEY PAY THESE COSTS WHEN I AM THE ONE WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM LOWER OPERATING EXPENSES AND HIGHER PROFITS?Because they gain immediate benefits, too. Reductions in their shelter populations translate into lower food, vet and euthanasia expenses, as well as a reduced need for personnel. The bottom line is, fewer animals mean greater financial flexibility to create and expand free or low cost spay and neuter programs, as well as humane education projects which benefittheir communities, thus further REDUCING pet-overpopulation.I'D LIKE TO JOIN THE PROGRAM -- WHAT DO I DO?Contact information appears at the bottom of the page. Simply call the representative you spoke with, and they will be happy to make arrangements with a participating shelter or other organization to complete your free request.IMPORTANT NOTE TO PARTICIPATING RETAILERS:As a FREE service to you--one which ensures the absolute LOWEST animal-related health care costs for your business, we ask your cooperation in allowing us to routinely monitor animals and report any potential problems to you, so we can work together to correct them, immediately. This eliminates much of the burden of having employees who may not be knowledgeable in recognizing ill, stressed, or otherwise needy animals, and will not only benefit the animals, but ultimately help promote warm relations with those whose top priority is the welfare of the animals in your care.Thank you for helping ensure a cruelty-free future for shelter animals everywhere!CONTACT INFO:-Name/Ph.# of volunteer #1-Name/Ph# of volunteer #2-Name of Organization affiliated with volunteers 1 & 2*******************************************************************************************************************************************************HOW THE PLAN WORKS -- PART 2 ~ GETTING SHELTERS INTERESTED ~Once AR volunteers have visited each animal retailer in their community, and have recorded the information necessary [i.e., which businesses are interested in obtaining shelter animals, how many, what types, etc.] then the next step is to set up meetings with EVERY shelter director within the community. For optimum impact, there should be at least 4 individuals, representing 4 different rescue organizations at each meeting. A brief but thorough explanation of the program"PARTNERING WITH RETAILERS TO REDUCE PET OVERPOPULATION" can be presented with a question & answer segment and/or discussion period following. USE THE FACT THAT YOU ALREADY HAVE RETAILERS LINED UP FOR THE PROGRAM, TO ADD LEVERAGE TO YOUR ARGUMENT. HANDOUTS FOR SHELTER DIRECTORS BELOW***********************************************************************************************************************************************Dear Shelter Director:~ PARTNERING WITH RETAILERS TO REDUCE PET OVERPOPULATION ~This common sense strategy will immediately and dramatically facilitate REDUCING THE GLUT OF UNWANTED ANIMALS suffering and dying in shelters -- and will help alleviate the continued overtaxing of animal rescue organizations. It shifts the balance of responsibility from the few [shelters and animal rescue groups] onto the shoulders of the many [retailers who sell animals], and who overwhelmingly contribute to the epidemic of surplus animals, by supporting animal 'mills'...and by selling UNALTERED pets.GOALS OF THIS PLAN- To immediately redistribute the glut of animals being killed in shelters, by transferring them to retail locations for purchase into good homes.- To stop the flow of FUTURE UNWANTED ANIMALS by giving retailers ALTERED, free, healthy, adoptable animals to sell.- To redirect animal retailers AWAY from supporting unscrupulous animal 'MILLS' by giving them a socially responsible, profitable and free alternative.- To shut down the majority of animal mills completely, permanently and without lawful intervention, by simply DRYING UP their largest customer base -- the retail animal industry.- To facilitate creating a simple system for matching the needs of 'participating' retailers [DEMAND], with their local 'participating' animal shelters [sUPPLY.]With potentially thousands of retailers selling [FIXED] shelter animals, and the majority of animal mills shut down, the surplus of unwanted animals is projected to drop by 75%.Some of the questions shelter directors may have:WHO WILL COORDINATE THE PROGRAM?It is in the best interest of the animals [and shelters] to have a highly reputable ANIMAL RESCUE GROUP [or groups] within the local community overseeing this project. Why?A) It frees up shelter personnel to continue to do their jobs and not take on added responsibility.B) AR volunteers are the most natural liaisons between retailers and shelters, because in order for the program to be successful, it requiresONGOING monitoring of retail establishments' treatment of their animals.AR volunteers are the most logical and cost effective choice to do this -- not paid shelter employees.D) Establishing a bond between AR volunteers and retailers helps promote community cooperation toward the common goal of reducing the surplus of unwanted animals and generates positive PR for all concerned.E) This program helps shelters quickly move away from killing and toward establishing free / low cost spay and neuter programs; humane education programs, and yet, does not require any more of their time or budget to implement, because it utilizes volunteers.IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER*Many shelters and county pounds are absolute hell-holes of disease, abuse, neglect and overcrowding. The public is never allowed to see these deplorable conditions. However, with even a MINIMUM of oversight and cooperation from retailers and AR groups working together, animals can be cared for in clean, relatively quiet and SUPERIOR conditions to what they experience in pounds. ANYONE, i.e., the general public or animal rights volunteers can make the rounds regularly to retailers, in order to inspect, monitor and ensure animals are treated well.*Retailers will reap HUGE profits by selling healthy animals [obtained free]...because they are no longer paying puppy mills for sick animals which cost retailers several hundreds of thousands of dollars in losses [and consumer ill-will] each year.*Puppy mills will be PUT OUT OF BUSINESS, permanently. [The majority of puppy mills are now supported by the retail pet industry.] If these retailers can get FREE, HEALTHY animals, why, as astute business people wouldn't they?*Precious county shelter space will be freed up under this program, and money which would normally be spent on food, vet care and euthanasia, redirected into providing free spay and neuter programs to the community. [Further reducing pet overpopulation. ]* "Special needs" animals, will have a greater chance within the shelter and/or rescue system if they are not competing with healthy animals for the same homes.*Ultimately, county shelters must GET OUT OF THE DEATH CAMP BUSINESS and into spaying, neutering and conducting humane education programs within the community. Eliminating the policy of killing healthy, adoptable beings, and focusing on working WITH the retail pet industry [ a major culprit behind pet overpopulation] is the only truly humane, immediately effective way to solve the problem.
