Carrizo Springs 8 burros were caught on a deer preserve in Southern Texas. Staff member Mark Meyers, Devin Kerley and Derek White along with SAC Volunteers Fred and Vicki MacKenney spend a few days in Carrizo Springs to catch the burros. Battling ticks, heat and rattlesnakes as big around as your leg, the team was able to catch one jack, four jennets and three foals. The remaining burros stuck to the thick brush and could not be trapped. We are hoping the remaining burros will be given more time and we will be allowed to try again. If not they will be shot, including the two remaining foals. Hoof School While staying in Texas, Devin and Derek were taught how to physically manage the ranch and the rescue affairs. This training will allow them to take over for Mark, freeing up his time to see his family a little more often as well as being able to build up the Virginia Operation. Part of their training included the art of hoof trimming. Both did very well and will be able to keep the Texas Herd in good shape. Castrations Several of the donkeys brought into TBR were mature males and in keeping with our policy, their male parts had to go! We enlisted the help of San Angelo Veterinarian Dr. Chris Womack. Eight jacks were castrated and all procedures went well. We always make sure that all veterinarians that are performing castrations know that the blood vessels must be tied off. Unlike a horse, a mature donkey can bleed to death if the vessels are not tied. Mark Is Homeward Bound! After a month and one half away from California, Mark is going home to see his family. His past few trips back to the golden state were only for a few days each time. During this trip Mark will be home for two solid weeks before having to begin the Nevada Burro Project. Talking With Donkeys The Third Edition is still on track for an October 15th release. Pre-Orders are limited to 100 copies and those are selling out quickly. Pre-order yours online at www.talkingwithdonkey.com Financial Crisis Everyone here at Peaceful Valley knows that we, as a nation, are facing tough times as a result of greed on Wall Street and in our political representatives. Please remember that no matter what happens, the donkeys need your help. Please donate to keep our operation going. www.donkeyrescue.org This message was sent from Peaceful Valley to deifspirit.
