Guest guest
WDCS Newsletter • August 2008 Dear friend We've been horrified to learn of plans to display Amazon river dolphins in a new aquarium in Norway and we need your help to stop them. Amazon river dolphins are special. They are intelligent, highly social animals and with their acute hearing, refined echolocation and unusually flexible neck they are perfectly adapted for the murky, fish-rich waters of the Amazon - a far cry from a small, isolated tank. Capture from the wild is a brutal and sometimes lethal process, which further endangers the survival of the species. These dolphins already face a huge number of threats as new development and industry encroach on their habitat. There are now so few left that the World Conservation Union has declared them as vulnerable - facing a high risk of extinction. In captivity, they die younger and breed less successfully. WDCS has launched a campaign with the Norwegian Animal Protection Alliance to stop the display, which is planned to open in Kristiansand in 2010. Together we're urging the city of Kristiansand, which owns the plot where the aquarium is to be developed, to withdraw its support for the project. You can help. Please send an e-mail to Krisiansand's Mayor. Sending your e-mail is simple and could save the lives of these special and vulnerable animals. Thank you for your support.
