The Tesco Turtle Campaign - An opportunity for you to make a big difference

Some of you may have contacted Tesco regarding the sale

and butchering of live animals in China only to have received whichever

standard reply was being sent out by Tesco at that point in time. Care

for the Wild International have been continuously campaigning and

debating with Tesco over the same issues and sometimes received the

same standard replies.

It is often been hoped that Tesco would be debated in a public arena

where the questions and answers could be viewed publicly.

Inside Business produce a magazine named Inside Living the latest issue

of which includes an article by Dr Barbara Maas from Care for the Wild

International.

We already know that Tesco have asked for a chance to reply to this

article in the next issue and we are all expecting to see the standard

replies.

The magazine article has to some extent drawn Tesco into the public

arena and we have a chance to keep them there, these are my thoughts.

If as many people as possible can email, write or phone Inside

Business about the Inside Living article congratulating them on

covering the issue, that will prompt them into wanting to keep the

article alive in further issues. An important part within your

communication would be to ask Inside Living to pose a

question from yourself to Tesco regarding their activity in China. I

believe that if they receive enough response and questions regarding

their article, that they will want to publish a pick of those

questions and answers from Tesco in future issues.

This is a fantastic opportunity and I do hope that as many of you who

can, will take this chance to help toward ending the suffering of the

live animals being sold by Tesco in China.

The article has been provided for download courtesy of the Inside Living magazine and can be found here:

I believe this could work and help toward ending the terrible suffering of those live animals sold by Tesco in China.

Please take the time to email, write or phone Inside

Business about the Inside Living article congratulating them on

covering the issue, and if you are happy to please ask them to pose your question to Tesco.

Here are a few questions just to help give you ideas, these are mainly

based on statements made by Tesco on their corporate website.

In my view any such statements on the corporate website should

encompass their operations worldwide or otherwise could be looked on as

misleading.

" Tesco is committed to conducting business in an

ethical and socially responsible manner. " ( Reference )

" We demand high standards of animal welfare and have livestock codes of

practice which cover all aspects of animal husbandry, animal welfare

requirements, environmental impact and food safety factors. " ( Reference )

" We will develop, maintain and implement policies, procedures and

management systems to assess and monitor, on a continuous basis, the

environmental impact of our operations. " ( Reference )

Q1. If Tesco are committed to conducting business in an ethical manner

why has it continued to sell live turtles in China when it has been supplied

detailed information from experts in the field demonstrating that what they are

doing is against established animal welfare values and also threatening global

conservation initiatives ?

Q2. If Tesco demand high standards of animal welfare can it please explain why

it allows live animals to be taken away by customers in China to be butchered

at home in any manner the customers wish ? Further to this why do Tesco

butcher animals alive in their stores in China ?

Q3. If Tesco monitor the environmental impact of their operations why have they

continued to sell turtles in China when Care for the Wild International have

supplied information that they are damaging the environment.

Q4. Can Tesco please explain how they are protecting their customers values,

morals and ethics when visitors from the UK to the Beijing Olympic games

are likely to visit a Tesco in China only to find that it carries out

operations that are abhorrent to their own values and could well be highly

disturbing to their family including their children ?

Q5. With worldwide efforts toward globalisation and normalisation can Tesco

explain why they are not standardising their operations worldwide and therefore

protecting the increasing number of visiting global customers from finding distressing

and disturbing practices within their stores that do not meet their customers

own values, morals and ethics ?

I hope that these example questions may help prompt your own.

Please take the time to help, this is a unique opportunity that we cannot afford to miss.

For those of you with the ability - Please cross-post widely.
