Nova Scotia's Fisheries Minister Ron Chisholm has responded to the proposed EU-wide ban on seal products with a call for an expansion of the grey seal hunt, with higher numbers killed. He has also requested access for Nova Scotia sealers to Sable Island, a protected area that is home to the largest breeding colony of grey seals in the world. Canada's Minister of Fisheries Loyola Hearn has stated that he is presently contemplating granting these requests. If the grey seal hunt in Nova Scotia is expanded and sealers are allowed to slaughter seals en masse on Sable Island, it could spell disaster for Nova Scotia's grey seal population. Each year, thousands of grey seal pups are slaughtered on islands off the coast of Nova Scotia, by sealers wielding crude wooden bats. These seal pups are herded together into terrified packs and bludgeoned repeatedly with wooden bats to stun them, and then sliced open with boxcutters, mere inches from each other. In February 2008 the government of Nova Scotia colluded with DFO to authorize the slaughter of up to 2,500 grey seal pups on Hay Island, part of the Scaterie Island protected wilderness area. For the first time ever, the slaughter of grey seal pups in Nova Scotia was witnessed and documented by a third party. Members of Humane Society International and Atlantic Canadian Anti-Sealing Coalition captured the horrific images on video. Please take a moment to below to send an email to Nova Scotia's Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, and to Canada's Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, with copies to various government officials and leaders of political parties. Please let them know that Canadians and members of the international community vehemently object to the killing of grey seals in Nova Scotia and strongly oppose any attempts to expand the slaughter. http://www.antisealingcoalition.ca/GreySeals/email_for_grey_seals.php Thank you for adding your voice to the growing list of people speaking up in defence of Nova Scotia's grey seals. With your support, we will win a victory and end the cruel slaughter of these pups! Please also take a moment to sign the petition to support the EU ban on seal products Thank you.
