Jenny is a high-risk elephant with a serious history of aberrant behaviors at the zoo, including self-mutilation and aggression. Jenny’s problems were sparked by some of the very same conditions she will be exposed to at Africam, including loud noises and vehicles. The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, a 2700-acre natural habitat refuge, is willing to take Jenny and give her the specialized care and attention she requires, in a quiet, therapeutic environment. Unlike Africam, Jenny will be protected at the sanctuary by U.S. animal welfare and anti-cruelty laws. Yet the Dallas Zoo did not even explore this option before making its decision to send Jenny to Africam. The choice is obvious – The Elephant Sanctuary can best meet Jenny’s special needs. But the Dallas Zoo and the City of Dallas think otherwise. If they get their way, the public will never have any input on Jenny’s future, even though the Dallas Zoo is a city facility and Jenny is “owned†by the people of Dallas. But you can help change that! Please contact Mayor Tom Leppert, the Dallas City Council and Dallas Park and Recreation Director Paul Dyer today and urge them to hold a public hearing on Jenny’s future. Even if you don’t live in Dallas, we urge you to write and follow up with a phone call. Jenny was captured in Africa and imported into the U.S. as a young calf for public display. We all have an obligation to ensure her well-being. It’s simply wrong for the Dallas Zoo to dump Jenny in a foreign country at a place that is so obviously wrong for this high risk elephant and can threaten her health and well-being. Please take action now by contacting the following city officials by letter, phone and email. Use the message points below, but keep your communications short and as personal as possible (no form letters!). In the subject line of your email, please write OPEN HEARING REQUEST, REQUEST FOR PUBLIC HEARING or a variation on that. If you are a constituent, please let your council member know. MESSAGE POINTS: § I urge you to hold a public hearing to discuss the future of Jenny, the elephant at Dallas Zoo. § The citizens of Dallas “own†Jenny, and the public deserve an open hearing to ensure her interests are protected. § Jenny is a high risk elephant who needs specialized care and attention. The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee can provide this and should be seriously considered for Jenny. CONTACTS: Here's an e-mail string of all the officials mentioned below.
