Please read the last post carefully. Note the use of a trapped coyote for TARGET PRACTICE. They suggest using trapped coyotes to practice hunting angles. One cannot make these things up. If so does it anchor them down good? I have been using a 17 HMR and a .223 and after knocking coyotes down they just popback upand are gone. I don't shoot a whole lot of coyotes, I trap more then I shoot. But I would like to skin the ones I hit. I have called tham and ran them with dogs. I'm thinking of moving up to a 204 but not sure I see much advantage over .223. I have a friend that does well with the old 22-250 but man it rips coyotes and new hole. He cut a red fox in half this year with it. Any thoughts.Don Re: .204 and running coyotesPost by lb on Jul 14, 2008, 11:13amIt's not your writing skills and punctuation, it's the clarity. You seem to have conflicting goals? If you center punch a running coyote with a 223 or a 204 assuming a decent bullet, they will stay down more often that not. If you fringe a coyote with a 223; fringing him with a 204 will not be very much better. Those chamberings will blow a red fox in half just as well as a 22-250. Maybe what you need is something that throws a lot of lead? I dunno?Good hunting. LB Re: .204 and running coyotesPost by trapperbilly on Jul 14, 2008, 12:02pmSounds like you need different loads!Scrap the 17HMR. In your .223 try a 60gr V-max. On the .204 question you ask about the running shot? Not a very good caliber to do that as your limited to smaller bullets.I shoot 32gr. V-max and some 40 gr berger bullets outta my Browning A-bolt.Ya gotta hit em in the boiler room and no shoulder bone etc...Bang flops are common but only with good bullet placement. Not knowing how far your shooting but I usually bring the 12ga along with #4 buck.I use to have to kill coyotes to get paid and letting a 100.00 bill go by by really hurt! You will get many opinions as to what and why etc...,204 is a nice caliber and fun to shoot but I'm afraid if you want it to perforn like a .243 it just ain't gonna happen. As a trapper you can also try things a non trapper can't! Instead of you hunting with dogs and calling before you go out trap a few coyotes and try shootting them at different ranges, angles bullets etc....this way if the hits poor you can adjust and rethink stuff without letting wounded coyotes run off. ********************************************************************* Men do not differ much about what things they call evil; They differ about what evil things they call "excusable." ~G.K.
