Petition Filed to Urge Military to End Live Animal Use inMedical Student CoursesLive animals, such as ferrets and pigs, are used in medicalstudent courses at the Uniformed Services University of theHealth Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, MD, and Wilford HallMedical Center at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. USUHSis the country's only military medical school, and the teachingmethods it uses impact medical student training at militaryfacilities across the country.John J. Pippin, M.D., F.A.C.C., the Physicians Committee forResponsible Medicine (PCRM, http://www.pcrm.org/) Senior Medicaland Research Adviser stated that "for every instance wherethey're using live animals, there are methods that can be usedinstead that would provide either equivalent or superioreducational value."PCRM and

The Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF, http://aldf.org)have spearheaded efforts to end the use of live animals formedical student training at U.S. military facilities. NEAVS(www.neavs.org) applauds and supports these efforts in ourshared commitment to replacing the use of animals at all levelsof science educationhttp://neavs.org/esec/student_concerns/student_concerns_index.htm and training. We ask our supporters to take action to help endthis unnecessary and inhumane practice. Please call, e-mail, fax, or write a letter to USUHS presidentCharles L. Rice, M.D., and the dean of the medical school LarryW. Laughlin, M.D., Ph.D., and politely ask them to end theschool's live animal lab program.Charles L. Rice,
