Guest guest Posted June 23, 2008 Report Share Posted June 23, 2008 Chickens die in road carnage About 150 chickens died or had to be slaughtered on Thursday when a truck carrying onions collided with another carrying 4 500 battery hens north of East London, a local SPCA said.Annette Rademeyer, chairperson of the King William's Town SPCA, said the chicken truck was transporting point-of-lay hens from Johannesburg to a farm between Stutterheim and Macleantown."Just after 7.30am this morning (Thursday), the truck carrying the chickens was hit from behind by another truck which was transporting a load of onions, resulting in the chicken truck overturning."SPCAs in the area responded in a race against time to get the birds off the overturned truck and its trailer, to the farm, which was just over two kilometres away, as temperatures started rising and the birds started showing signs of heat stress."Had the accident happened in the summer, most of the birds would have died," she said."We commend traffic services and the police for keeping traffic moving and for keeping the crowds that gathered to try and steal chickens, at bay so that the SPCA could do its work." - Sapa Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
