Pet dogs get caught in drug wars crossfire

Pets are becoming the latest victims in the Western Cape's drug wars and are often caught in the crossfire during police raids. In Hout Bay, a dog in an enclosed yard was shot in an eye with a rubber bullet, while in Hanover Park, a small cross-breed was killed when police shot it nine times while pursuing a suspect.Hout Bay Pets (Pro-active Education, Treatment and Sterilisation) paid for the operation to remove the eye.The organisation's Hilary Barclay said she could understand the police shooting a dog if it was trying to attack them, but not if it was locked up in a yard.

SPCA acting chief executive Allan Perrins said it was inexcusable. He said they sometimes accompanied police on raids because druglords and gangsters often had vicious dogs on their properties."It has worked well in the past. We've been on a good few raids and removed the dogs."He said it prevented the police from being attacked and the dogs from being injured. - Staff Reporter
