International Fund for Animal Welfare | June 19, 2008 A Better World for Animals and People Animal Emergency Following Recent Wave of Violence Waiting for a new forever home. Dear Jill, The IFAW-supported Community Led Animal Welfare (CLAW) clinic near Johannesburg is in desperate need of emergency funding. The recent wave of terrible violence that killed and displaced many foreign nationals has left pets abandoned, starving, and in need of urgent veterinary care. Will you please help care for these innocent victims?Staff and volunteers are heroically tending to the animals, but they are running out of space and equipment. This emergency comes on top of the work the clinic does caring for hundreds of dogs per month in Johannesburg’s impoverished townships. The veterinary clinic was never meant to house large numbers of animals, yet the staff has had to turn the clinic into a temporary shelter. As a result, they have had to house and care for hundreds of dogs since the violence erupted. The violence has abated, but new dogs arrive as quickly as the staff is able to adopt others out – on average there are 50 dogs in the shelter on any given day. The clinic has run out of cages…the washer and dryer needed to clean the beds, towels, and blankets are not working…and the staff members are exhausted. But they press on, hopeful that they can find new homes for these poor dogs. Please open your heart to these abandoned pets.Any amount you can spare will help…every single gift will make a difference.Thank you for caring,Jason Bell-LeaskDirector, IFAW Southern Africa p.s. The team rescued one puppy who was found curled up next to his dead mother, licking her to try to wake her up. He had to be coaxed away and now awaits adoption. Please help him and other sick and abandoned pets by making a donation today. This message was sent to lady All gifts to IFAW represent a contribution to IFAW's entire mission. It also eliminates cheque-processing costs, so more money goes directly to saving animals.
