International Fund for Animal Welfare | June 5, 2008 A Better World for Animals and People Support Ocean Sanctuaries for Whales Act Now and earn Humpback Whale status! Dear Nancie, Please send an e-mail to International Whaling Commission (IWC) member countries asking them to vote for the South Atlantic Whale Sanctuary. The (IWC) meets from June 23rd - 27th in Santiago, Chile, to make decisions about issues affecting whales. The Commission members may consider a proposal to create a South Atlantic Whale Sanctuary that will extend across the South Atlantic, from the coast of South America to the coast of Africa. We need your help to encourage IWC member countries around to world to vote ‘YES’ on the sanctuary.Act now to help create this safe harbor for whales. Whales are not savedCommercial whaling has been banned for more than two decades. However, Japan continues to kill these gentle creatures by claiming that they are killing for scientific research, even though they sell the whale meat. Whales are shot with exploding harpoons from huge ships and often suffer greatly before dying. More than 30,000 whales have been killed since the 1986 ban on whaling. Act now to help animals and peopleIFAW always strives to find solutions that benefit animals and people. The South Atlantic Whale Sanctuary is an important proposal that will provide bordering nations with opportunities to grow whale-watching operations. The tourism income would be especially helpful for these developing nations. In addition, the sanctuary would provide a safe area to conduct humane scientific research. A YES vote on the South Atlantic Whale Sanctuary will show that the IWC is truly committed to whale conservation. Act Now to Save WhalesIn the weeks leading up to the IWC meeting, IFAW will be campaigning vigorously to convince IWC member countries to approve the South Atlantic Whale Sanctuary. But we can’t do it alone. Please act now by sending an e-mail to encourage IWC members to approve the Southern Atlantic Whale Sanctuary. To keep up to date on progress for whales, please sign up here for mobile alerts.Together we can make the sanctuary a safe harbor for whales, and in the process, help provide economic opportunities for the people in the bordering nations. Thank you for acting now to help save whales,Fred O'ReganPresident and CEOp.s. Sending an e-mail to encourage IWC members to vote for the sanctuary is the second step in IFAW’s S.O.S. campaign and will earn you the status of humpback whale, and a free whale wallpaper download. Work your way up to blue whale status by completing each step along the way. If you haven’t already, please sign on to our petition, and keep an eye out for more ways that you can help. It also eliminates check-processing costs, so more money goes directly to saving animals. But if you prefer to donate by phone or mail, simply click here for address information.NOTE: To make sure you continue to receive further emails from IFAW, please add fred to your email address book.
