Guest guest
The super hero who said 'Woof' May 29, 2008 Edition 1 John Yeld When animal welfare "super heroes" stepped up to receive awards for their efforts, they all said "Thank you" - except one, who just said "Woof!" That's because "AJ" is a dog whose blood-donations have saved the lives of many of her kind in Khayelitsha. The Animal Action Awards were presented by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (Ifaw) at a ceremony yesterday. The awards "honour and acknowledge the often unsung heroes of animal welfare" in categories that include prevention of cruelty, assisting animals in crisis and distress, promoting animal welfare and conservation policies, working to stop commercial exploitation of animals, and protecting habitats. Recipients included veteran Eastern Cape ANC MP, environment portfolio committee member and former Whaling Commissioner Judy Chalmers, who was honoured with a "Lifetime Dedication" award for her work in "planning policies and legislation that will ensure South Africa's unique biodiversity is preserved for future generations". Local baboon conservationist Jenni Trethowan received a similar award, as did top environmental scientist Professor Rudi van Aarde, who heads Pretoria University's Conservation Ecology Research Unit. Venessa Strauss, rehabilitation manager of Sanccob at Rietvlei, took an "Animal Rehabilitator of the Year" award, as did farrier Ashley Delman and saddler Juliaan Jordaan, both of the Cart Horse Protection Association. A similar award went to Nicholas Ndzube, animal welfare assistant at the Emma Animal Rescue Society (Tears).
