In February, WSPA and the Handle with Care coalition launched a global campaign to end the long distance transport of animals to slaughter. A landmark victory is now at hand that would shut down one of the world’s worst transport routes - the shipment of live cattle from Brazil to the Middle East.

Please support the Public Prosecutor of Pará State in his fight to ban live animal exports from one of Brazil’s busiest ports.

Live exports are currently suspended, and this alone is groundbreaking. It is the first time ever that animal welfare has been a factor when halting live exports from a port. The Public Prosecutor, Benedito Wilson Sá, also argued live exports damage the environment, discourage tourism and are ruining the state’s slaughterhouse industry.

If the suspension becomes a permanent ban, over 100,000 cattle a year will be saved from an horrific three-week land and sea journey to Lebanon, during which many animals die. But the suspension faces legal challenges by the export industry, forcing the Public Prosecutor to defend his case.

Please send Benedito Wilson Sá an email of support. Let him know that the world is watching Brazil’s reaction to the suspension and is backing a permanent ban on the cruel and unnecessary long distance transport of animals for slaughter.
