After about a week of being fed nicot ine, the babie s' heads are cut off and their brain s are disse cted.- Resea rcher Kent Pinke rton at Unive rsity of Calif ornia , Davis , subje cts pregn ant rhesu s monke ys to smoki ng chamb ers where they are force d to inhal e cigar ette smoke for six hours each day, five days a week. When the infan ts are ten weeks old, they are kille d by letha l injec tion and their lungs are disse cted for analy sis.Over the past five years , the Natio nal Insti tutes of Healt h ( NIH) has given at least $ 16.5 milli on to this categ ory of resea rch. This appal ling figur e does not refle ct the total cost of all nicot ine resea rch on anima ls, but only that which focus es on nicot ine' s effec t on fetal and newbo rn devel opmen t.Anima l resea rcher s staun chly defen d these exper iment s as neces sary for impro ving mater nal and newbo rn healt h. But answe rs don' t come from anima l studi es. After decad es of anima l studi es, we still have not solve d the probl em of smoki ng durin g pregn ancy.
