Meat producers fought to preserve those exceptions untillast week, when a coalition of major industry groups reversed theirposition and joined animal advocates and several lawmakers in callingfor an absolute ban.But Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer, who defended the

current policyduring congressional hearings into the Chino meat recall, has remainedsilent."He's serious about addressing the issue," Agriculture Departmentspokesman Chris Connelly said Monday.
