M & S (Marks & Spencer) BECOMES FIRST HIGH STREET RETAILER TO EXCLUSIVELY OFFER BUAV CERTIFIED BEAUTY & HOUSEHOLD PRODUCTSCREATING THE LARGEST RANGE OF "CRUELTY FREE" PRODUCTS ON THE HIGHSTREETMarks & Spencer has announced it is the first high street retailer toexclusively offer BUAV (British Union for the Abolition ofVivisection) "Cruelty Free" approved household cleaning products andbeauty collections. M & S customers can shop with a clean consciencefrom the largest range of "cruelty free" household and beauty productsavailable on the high street which covers over 1,200 products andtheir individual ingredients - from lavender laundry liquid through totea tree face wipes.BUAV chief executive Michelle Thew says, "We applaud Marks & Spencerfor taking this step to prove its cruelty-free retailer status. TheBUAV's Bunny Logo approval is the global gold standard in

cruelty-freecosmetics and household products, so I'm delighted M & S has taken thisstep to reassure its customers. It sends out a clear message thattoday's ethically aware consumers will only trust official approval, and that it is possible to respond to that demand on a national scale.I'm now calling on other unapproved high street retailers andsupermarkets to follow suit and clear all animal tested products fromthe shelves once and for all."Marks & Spencer found from consumer research that over 80% ofconsumers are concerned about animal testing and almost 30% ofconsumers are unaware that household products are tested on animals. The certification demonstrates M & S's commitment to its 'Plan A' ecoinitiative to tackle consumer issues like animal welfare and the useof raw materials.Mike Barry, M & S Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, "We careabout animal welfare as passionately as our

customers do. With over80% of consumers concerned about animal testing and specificallyhousehold products, being able to clearly label all our beauty andhousehold ranges with the BUAV's Leaping Bunny logo will give ourcustomers added peace of mind and be their guide to 'Cruelty FreeShopping'. "The BUAV's Leaping Bunny logo will now appear on all M & S householdproducts and has been phased in on beauty products since April 2007.The logo signifies that each of the 1,200 products have not beentested on animals and that none of the individual ingredients withineach product have been tested on animals, either by M & S or itssuppliers. This is in line with the BUAV Humane Household ProductsStandard and the BUAV Humane Cosmetics Standard. For further information please contact:Household: Ali Delecia - alison.delecia - 0208718 1253Beauty: Janice Hards - Janice - 020 8293 7150BUAV: Mary-Louise Clews mary-louise.clews 020 7619 6978For further information about animal testing, the Humane CosmeticsStandard or the Humane Household Products Standard visit BUAV'swebsite: www.gocrueltyfree.org
