Chipotle to support Controlled Atmosphere Killing of Chickens

Chipotle Mexican Grill and the People for the Ethical Treatment ofAnimals ended their standoff over a chicken-slaughtering policy, withthe fast-casual restaurant chain agreeing to give preference tosuppliers that use what the animal rights group calls a less cruelkilling method.PETA today said it withdrew a resolution it placed on Chipotle's proxyin light of the announcement. The animal rights group is lobbyingChipotle, along with dozens of other restaurants, supermarkets andmeat suppliers, to support a technique called controlled-atmospherekilling, which exposes birds to gases that put them to sleep."While we wish that Chipotle's customers would stick to the greatvegetarian items on the menu, the company should be commended fortaking steps to improve the dying conditions for some of the animalswho are killed for its restaurants," PETA Vice President BruceFriedrich said in a statement.-- full
