Fortunately, he was wearing a Kevlar vest and is unharmed. I have just spoken with him personally and confirmed that he is fine. Reuters reported that the Japanese whalers initially admitted to firing a “warning shot,” but in reports since then, they have denied firing any shots. Unfortunately for them, the proof is in Paul’s vest, and we have it all on video. Two of our crew members sustained bruises while dodging flash grenades thrown by armed Japanese Coast Guard Officers, but they are also fine. We have notified their families to assure them of their safety. At one point while I was on the phone with the ship, I could hear flash grenades exploding in rapid succession in the background. It was surreal. The last I heard from Paul, the seas were getting rougher and the Nisshin Maru had fled due north. We have just posted photos and video on our website, including footage of Paul prying the bullet out of his Kevlar vest. Stay tuned for more, but in the meantime, I want to assure you that Paul is OK. We are all extremely grateful for this fact and counting our blessings that he was wearing Kevlar and an anti-poaching badge.
