CAMPAIGNERS PREPARE FOR BUS ROUTE BATTLE Date : 21.02.08 Residents fighting plans for a hi-tech bus route behind their homes are stepping up their campaign. If the council-backed proposals are given the green light, the new bus route would be built across the city, from Newbridge Park-and-Ride to an as yet unspecified location east of the city. The plans have sparked fierce opposition from homeowners who face losing chunks of their garden. They claim they will lose their privacy and that an established wildlife haven could be affected. The Bus Rapid Transit route is one part of a £53.8 million package of public transport improvements planned for the area. However, hundreds of people have already signed a petition against the bus route. And on Tuesday, a Response2Route protest group meeting attracted around 115 people at the Dolphin Inn in Locksbrook Road.A leaflet drop and public meeting are being planned to which Bath MP Don Foster, transport minister Jim Fitzpatrick, council officers, and environmental groups would be invited.Group spokeswoman Jo McCarron said: "We want to get some questions answered."Personally I am concerned because it is a green corridor and they should utilise existing roads."To build a new road to save two minutes does not justify this expense."If planning permission is granted work could start on the route as early as next year.A Bath and North East Somerset Council spokesman said: "The council has been engaging with residents in areas close to the proposed route and leaflets have been issued."A further public exhibition will be held in early April and, meanwhile, officers will continue to keep in contact with the residents."To find out more about the protesters' campaign, visit http://response2route.wordpress.com ..
