EUROPEAN CONVENTION PROTECTING PETS AND STRAY ANIMALS

Mr. Alain Hutchinson MEP, is committed to cooperate for animal welfare and to get a “European Convention Protecting Pets and Stray Animals” passed as soon as possible.

AGAINST THE “FARRA DO BOI” IN BRASIL

One of the most savage and cruel rituals involving animals is Brazil’s “Farra do Boi.” Loosely translated as “Festival of the Oxen” or “Ox Fun Days,” the annual event involves the systematic and deliberate torture of several hundred oxen in more than 30 communities throughout the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina. CHILEAN PRIMATE RESEARCH CENTRE CLOSED DOWN

The primate research centre in Santiago, has been closed. After the centre was exposed by an undercover investigation during the summer of 2003, and a constant campaign to close it down, the 88 monkeys kept inside this lab were taken to Monkey World by a Chilean Air Force plane. http://www.oipa.org/vivisection/news/chilean.html

 

NO MORE DOG SACRIFICES IN MED SCHOOLS IN USA

The new year began with a piece of good news. Case Western Reserve School of Medicine will end cardiology lessons wherein students examine the beating heart of a live dog, which results in the animal’s death. EFSA LAUNCHES ITS DRAFT OPINION ON ANIMAL CLONING FOR PUBLIC CONSULTATION

EFSA is launching a public consultation on its draft scientific opinion on the implications of animal cloning on food safety, animal health and welfare and the environment. The work follows a request from the European Commission (EC) to EFSA for advice on this issue in February 2007. EFSA’s opinion will help inform consideration of any future EU measures in relation to animal clones and products obtained from these animals.

OIPA INSPECTORS IN ITALY

From today OIPA Inspectors in Milan offer more guarantee for the protection of the animals in the city. Animals are not toys.

OIPA inspectors investigate and help prevent cruelty to animals. Their work includes: investigate neglect and cruelty complaints, inspect animal establishments, inspect events like circuses, produce written reports, advise owners on proper care.

300 CATS SAVED IN ITALY

Volunteers of OIPA Varese branch and their delegated have worked hard during these months: they have helped, fed and taken to the vet for spaying/neutering about 300 stray cats in Gallarate (VA).
