Dear Jillian,As someone who cares deeply about all animals and is an important part of PETA's work to stop animal abuse and suffering, you'll appreciate the great news I'm about to share with you!Sainsbury's, Morrisons and the Co-op have all announced within the past few weeks that they will phase out the sale of eggs from "battery hens" in their stores nationwide. They will now join Marks and Spencer and Waitrose, which have already removed this cruel item from their shelves.Equally important is the news that the EU has recently released a new report confirming that the 2012 ban on battery cages across the European Union – a ban which many egg farmers and some member states were hoping to overturn – is here to stay! While there will be furious attempts by member states to delay or stop this ban from being enacted, this announcement of a EU-wide commitment to the 2012 ban is a huge milestone for the millions of hens who spend every day of their short lives trapped behind the bars of tiny cages and forced to produce eggs until they are killed.I want you to know that PETA will continue our hard-hitting campaigning against the use of battery cages for as long as it takes to get rid of every last one. And we will continue our fight to push even harder to reform all animal agriculture – surely the most pervasive form of cruelty to animals in the world.I also want to take a moment to offer my sincere appreciation for your support – through your activism, donations and compassion. None of the historic changes we are seeing would have been possible were it not for the help of caring people like you! Kind Regards,Poorva JoshipuraDirectorPETA Europe
