And at least it should be a happy one for Mister Splashy Pants and his fellow humpback whales, who live to see another year! The Japanese Government announced in December that it had abandoned plans to take 50 humpbacks in the Southern Ocean this season and the next. Good news, and a great victory for all of you who took part in our cyberaction urging the heads of Germany, the US, Chile and Brazil to call on Japan to stop whaling. Let's keep up the good work in 2008. We have a long list of victories that prove that when we speak with one voice, we can change the world ? and let's start the new year off with something you can do immediately. In your face(book)! Greenpeace's plan to set aside 40 percent of the world's oceans as no-take zones could mean survival for sharks, tuna, whales, and a wide range of threatened and endangered species. Not another factory whaling ship The future of whaling may well be decided by the Japanese Government's plans to build a new factory ship to replace the ageing and fire-plagued Nisshin Maru. Approximately 12,000 of you have already sent a message to the Japanese Prime Minister, asking him to demand full public disclosure of any plans for a new ship is made. If you haven't added your name to that list yet, please do! Japanese whalers still plan to kill fin and minke whales this season -- but by stopping a new ship, we could stop all whaling in the Southern Ocean forever!
