Take Action for N. Huntingdon Geese: Call-In Fri. & Vigil Sunday! TWO ACTIONS AGAINST THE NORTH HUNTINGDON CANADA GEESE HUNT--EVERYONE'S PARTICIPATION IS NEEDED! 1) CALL-IN / EMAIL DAY - FRIDAY DECEMBER 7TH 2) CANDLELIGHT VIGIL - SUNDAY DECEMBER 9TH As announced in previous editions of LYnX, North Huntingdon Township is planning a series of 4 Canada Geese hunts on December 10, 12, 17 and 19 at Indian Lake. However, current Township Manager Kelly Wolfe, in her previous capacity as Recreations Director, already worked with local Humane Goose Control specialist Gretta McIntyre at Indian Lake. While some of the measures Gretta suggested at the time were implemented, the ones she thought would work best to fully resolve the problem at Indian Lake - application of Flight Control (a non-toxic lawn

repellent) and egg addling - were never implemented. Even though the measures that were taken had started to work, North Huntingdon subsequently abandoned any active strategy of humane goose control and chose the lethal approach instead. Several local people have since attempted to persuade the municipality to opt for non-lethal means, to no avail. Next week's hunt is being justified by a cost issue. The Canada Geese at Indian Lake don't need to be killed next week to resolve this issue. Humans and geese can co-exist peacefully, at a minimal cost to the township, through the implementation of an effective, non-lethal integrated goose management program. We are asking you to participate in one or both of the following actions in the next few days. WE CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH THAT YOUR PARTICIPATION IS VITAL if we are going to get the attention of North Huntingdon authorities. 1) CALL-IN /EMAIL DAY ON FRIDAY DECEMBER 7th Call Kelly Wolfe, Township Manager, at: 724 863 3806 (office open from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm) OR Email her at: info [see discussion points below] 2) Attend the CANDLELIGHT VIGIL outside the North Huntingdon Town House on SUNDAY, DECEMBER 9th, at 4:30 pm. This will be a peaceful

act of opposition to the growing prevalence of Canada goose kills (hunts, round-ups and poisonings), not just in North Huntingdon, but throughout the area, and indeed throughout the country. [see directions below] Discussion Points: Tell the Township Manager that you strongly oppose these goose hunts. Ask her to get in touch with local Geese Control specialists such as Gretta McIntyre or the GeesePeace organization. - shoots don't work, because they don't alter the environment to make it less appealing to Canada geese. In other words more geese will fill the gap left by the geese killed in the hunt. - non-lethal, integrated goose management

programs cost money, but the investment is not huge and is a good one, given the fact that they aim to alter the environment and, as a result, actually succeed in deterring the geese from returning when used consistently and correctly. Countless such programs have been used successfully across the US and in Europe. - officials and the public need to understand that there has never been any proof that goose feces carry a risk to humans. Consider this quote from Dr. Timothy Ford of the Microbiology Dept. of Environmental Health, Harvard School of Public Health: "Numbers of Cryptosporidium oocysts associated with Canada geese and waterfowl in general are likely to be minimal, unimportant, relative to the potential for oocysts shed from other forms of wildlife and humans. In my mind, there is no possibility that the Canada goose will ever be a

major route of infection. To suggest otherwise is utterly ludicrous, and you can quote me." - Canada geese are appreciated by many park visitors. These hunts are extremely upsetting for the local people who appreciate the presence of the geese. - Teaching children that violence is the only way to solve a problem is a terrible lesson, one that may have repercussions later on a societal level. Directions from Pittsburgh: - Take the Parkway East through the Squirrel Hill Tunnel - Exit at exit 8A [Forest Hills] and merge onto Route 30 East - Continue for 11 miles on Route 30 East - Look for the Hamilton Buick dealership on your left. Take a left here onto Center Highway. - The Town House

is about 0.1 miles up Center Highway on your left. The vigil will take place in front of the Town House. We will be carpooling down there, so if you need a ride or if you are able to offer one, please let us know at voicesforanimals@ gmail.com or 1-877-321-4VFA. ------------ --------- ---- Voices for Animals of Western Pennsylvania Post Office Box 7181 Pittsburgh, PA 15213 1-877-321-4VFA voicesforanimals@ gmail.com Letter to Kelly Wolfe: Over 6 and1/2 billion people occupy this planet as its resources are taxed to the breaking point; most of whom cannot live with one another in peace because they have been taught nothing but violence since birth. The hope is, that some of those in positions of power will show our young, humanity is not the TRUE vermin it has historically proven itself to be. Man

slips much too easily into 'destroyer' mode; even when he has knowledge of the correct and ethical approach to a dilemma which could save lives. He panders to his base desires and places the almighty buck above his own humanness--losing his soul in the end. Our Earth is dying because of this attitude. We must turn away from our violent arrogance in believing we and only we have the right to survivorship in this world. Please--do what is honorable--use non-lethal methods to control the Canada geese and call off this hunt, permanently.Sincerely,Brennan BrowneThe concept of 'animal rights' values the simple premise that ALL living creatures have a "right" to be allowed to live their lives as originally intended; without victimization--free from brutality. It is a right that EVERY being strives for.~Brennan Browne~
