Guest guest
For the record, chocolate covered gummy bears are one of the four basic food groups. Heart disease kills near 1/2 million people a year, and I'm not even counting strokes, obesity, and diabetes type II. The number of people, both vegan and non-vegan, who do not know how much fat, sugar, and/or salt they should limit themselves to in their diet to drastically reduce the potential of such destructive disorders is astounding to me. Then there's that myth of " moderation is okay. " I think many people rationalize eating such nutritiously vapid products by using such statements, terms such as 'comfort food' and 'treat " without any real awareness of the addiction. It's ironic that on Valentine's Day, so many people will eat excessive sugar and fat (the later actually constricting the circulatory system and having an impact on any, ahem, biological urges later). It amazes me to realize how many well-intentioned men will give those they love something to eat as a " treat " that will have more sugar per serving then recommended for the entire day by the American Heart Association. Even a well-known Vegan organization put up a weekly recipe that had extremely high amount of fat and sugar in it, a self-proclaimed, " Love Cake. " So sad. FYI, Mark (living where cholesterol is one of the four food groups) http://www.soulveggie.com
Guest guest
Sorry if I freaked you out, Mark! Ummmm......I was KIDDING. Obviously this issue is a really intense one for you, and I understand that because I have issues like that myself that I feel strongly about. Just as obviously, this might not be one of them. Sorry! I actually just had the "moderation" discussion with some people on another list--and I was on your side, totally. I even got some people there to see the issue in a new light, which was cool. I haven't had chocolate covered gummy bears in years--but I DO love them. Am I supposed to say I don't love them, just because I know they're not "healthy"? I also love Hostess Snowballs. Sorry again! But do I eat them? Yeah, maybe once every few years. Do I believe they are safe or healthy? Absolutely not. I'm not stupid. I am not, as I said, a proponent of "moderation". But I also believe that if you keep saying no no no to everything, when you grew up eating those things, you can set yourself up to fail. I'm no martyr. I'm not that strong. Not making excuses because I do know these things are harmful. But I also don't want to constantly give a message of "deprivation" to people because I think that negates all the POSITIVE things I might tell them. We all come from different places, and I might have a more lighthearted approach to things than some. But as long as I stay basically on the right track, and I know what is healthy and what is not, that's pretty darn good--for ME. Might not be for everyone, but it's where I am right now.
