Guest guest Posted December 15, 2009 Report Share Posted December 15, 2009 Although this is borderline OT, imho, I'll go for it: I'm very much a PCRM fan and have been proselytizing about them for years (indeed, Barnard's also in the " Mad Cowboy Doc. " ) My concern about Tal is that in the rush to take advantage of getting more people interested or intrigued in going Veg through his recent fame, we don't forget that high-fat vegan, although at times better than a meat-dairy-egg based diet, still doesn't address those diseases associated with high fat (and/or salt, and/or sugar). I feel the same way about Ellen Degeneres (e.g., her nacho sauce recipe is resplendent in added oil and excessively expensive agar flakes). I worry the same way about people who say that Daiya Cheese, for example, will save more animals, and, effectively, don't worry about the fat and heart disease. An interesting moral quandry. Some argue it's transitional, I believe there's an underlying principle, no added fat, that needs to be addressed asap in one's life before the damage is done. Anyway, I wrote a polite e-mail to the head of PCRM's Diabetes Program (they've reversed Type II Diabetes through a no-added fat vegan diet), and suggested that they insure that Tal covers recipes a little less extreme in fat than most of his are currently. After all, they guy keeps saying " Fat is Flavor " .... for me, if I were an alcoholic, it's like someone saying " the more you drink the better you feel. Don't worry about it " Re-calibrating one's taste buds to not crave fat (and/or sugar, and/or salt) isn't the easiest thing to do, but it's quite doable. It'll be three years for me this coming February. ....but, I don't want to clutter the list up with this too much, but I did feel obligated to note that I fully support PCRM's efforts, and also managed to get some of their recipes (and most are quite good on the website) into " No More Bull. " They consistently do great work, and since they bestowed the first " Benjamin Spock Award " (no relationship to the Vulcan), on Esselstyn, well..... Guest guest Posted December 15, 2009 Report Share Posted December 15, 2009 Howard Lyman is actually the 'Mad Cowboy' but he does collaborate with Neal Barnard on seminars, and they mention each other in their respective books, use Jennifer Raymond (Peaceful Palate, Fat Free and Easy, Best of Jenny's Kitchen) for low fat recipes and such. The No More Bull cookbook is a good one and I gave it as a gift one Christmas to those relatives who were waffling on giving up meat for their own good as we have an inherited heart problem going back generations.Did it work? ...no... but they do have some recipes that they adopted from the book - a step in the right direction.Mark you should be proud of your achievements and contributing your encouraging comments helps us all stay on course.
