There’s a peanut butter cookie recipe way

down in this email, but it calls for margarine.  Would applesauce work as a substitution?

Judy

PS Sorry about black background.  I don’t

know how to get rid of it.

Booya and Boo!

We are thisclose to

announcing the winners of the 2009 Veggie Awards (hence the booya!), and the

suspense is just about killing us. Of course, suspense and coming close to

death are appropriate for October, what with Halloween right around the

corner (hence the spooky boo). Don't miss our Halloween How-To, coming soon

to vegnews.com. Here's a

little something to read while you wait for the big announcement of the

winners!

Baltimore's

Veg Pledge

The Baltimore

public school system recently became the first in the country to adopt the

Meatless Monday program, and will only serve vegetarian options to its

roughly 80,000 students on Mondays. For the effort, PETA is bestowing a

Proggy Award on Baltimore for " Most Progressive

School District 2009. " Kudos!

Beef with Beef

A front-page story from The New York Times is making headlines around

the country with the horrifying account of a young woman who became paralyzed

from the waist down after eating a hamburger

contaminated with E. coli. The sad story clearly illustrates the dangers of

meat production, and brings national attention to the horrors of the meat

industry.

Human Rights

Often, animal

activists are perceived as being single-issue focused. A recent report on the

conditions of meatpacking plants in Nebraska

showed that increased line speeds has led to an increase in workers' injuries

on the job. Adopting a veg diet is an easy first step to protect not only

animals, but also workers from these awful conditions.

Soft & Simple

Peanut Butter Cookies

In

case you somehow missed the fact that October is Vegan MoFo (aka,

Vegan Month of Food), we're here to help. In honor of the online fun, we

chose this month's recipe from Allyson of Manifest:Vegan. We've

got cookies on the brain here at the VNHQ since we're at work on our

first-ever Holiday Cookie Collection, and these peanut butter cookies

look incredible.

What You Need:

1 cup peanut butter

1/2 cup non-hydrogenated margarine, cold

1-1/4 cups sugar, divided

1 tablespoon vinegar

3 tablespoons water

1 teaspoon vanilla

1/2 teaspoon salt

3/4 teaspoon baking powder

1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour

What You Do:

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a medium bowl, cream 1 cup sugar, peanut

butter, and non-hydrogenated margarine together just until mixed. Add

vinegar, water, vanilla, salt, and baking powder. Mix in flour until well

blended.

2. Roll dough into 1-inch spheres and place about 2 inches apart on ungreased

cookie sheet. Using a sugar-coated fork, make an “x” on the top of each

cookie, gently pressing down to flatten it as you do so. Bake for 9 to 11

minutes.

Coconut Milk Creamer

As you might or

might not already know, the VNHQ is mostly peopled with coffee drinkers. OK,

" drinkers " is putting it mildly, we are downright obsessed with our

morning brew, and don't tend to function well without it. Turtle Mountain's new

line of Coconut Milk Creamers puts some " fun " back in

" function. " Available in Original, French Vanilla, and Hazelnut,

these rich mixers make the most out of our morning mugs.

Web Store Sneak Peek!

to stock our homes? Hundreds of new products pass through our office every

month, and we've hand-selected some of our all-time favorites for inclusion

in our totally revamped web store, which will launch right in time for the

holidays. Our sister site, vegweb.com, has a similar store that's

open right now, so go ahead and check it out for a tiny taste of what's to

come!
