New vegan-lots of questions

I have been vegetarian for most of my life, off and on. I decided about a month

ago that I need (for my own benefit) to become vegan. So far I really like it

and feel much better and lost 10 pounds just cutting out dairy. I do have some

questions though.

 

1. Is there a vegan cheese that melts?

 

2. Is there a website that shows what companies do or don't do animal testing?

 

3. I've been checking out lots of books from the library and getting some great

recipes, but there are so many cookbooks available, what is everyone's top 10?

I've checked out Garden of Vegan, How it all Vegan, Vegan with a Vengeance, Dr.

Esselstyn's book, Dr. McDougalls' books. I love to cook and bake and have lots

of fresh vegies and fruits available to me. I don't care for most meat

substitutes as they remind me in texture too much to real meat.

I recommend Isa Chandra Moskowitz' Veganomicon and Vegan Brunch.  Also, Dreena Burton's books are great - I especially like Eat, Drink and Be Vegan.

Be aware, though, that these are not necessarily fat free or even low fat, you will have to adapt many of the recipes in them.In answer to your other questions, I believe the Follow Your Heart cheeses, at least the mozzarella style, do sort of melt. Also, Teese does.  Unfortunately, these are high fat products so I don't use them.

Hi MichelleGood for you!I'm in New Zealand and I've been vegan for five years now, and I'm never going back. I'm healthier and happier and my conscience is eased (re animals and the environment).Isn't it amazing what cutting out dairy can do? And so frustrating that all those people think it's a health food...My favourite vegan cheese for melting is Cheezly, which is made in England but available thru some retailers in the US (maybe just vegan online retailers).Sounds like you've got plenty of great cookbooks to get started with! Thank you! I have Vegan with a Vengeance Cookbook checked out from the library

right now (Isa Chandra Moskowitz book).

 

I'm saving this post so I can look for the cheeses. I won't be eating much since

I'm used to cooking and eating without them, but it will be nice to have

something for special occasions.

Look for a vegan cheese that says on the package it melts easier.
